I'm interested in obtaining some topo maps for a specific lake and the surrounding area. Can someone recommend some software (Mac or PC) that they've used? How about ordering prints from someplace?

You should be able to order topo maps from the USGS. You might also be able to check them out of a library. I know my college library had a bunch of them.

I think this is what you want in terms of buying the USGS maps: http://store.usgs.gov/scripts/wgate/...;~OKCODE=START

For paper maps, the poster who suggested the USGS is spot on. They make the best, most accurate maps in the United States.

For computer maps, try this software from National Geographic. It is the TOPO! state series and comes with a decent mapping app. For navigation purposes I would go with Route Buddy.

Where are you going?

Note that per NGS's site, Topo works on Macs too! This is VERY good!

And you can't beat NGS for map making-not without getting the USGS's database itself, anyway.

It's in the "system requirements" part-it specifies OS X.

It looks like you have the upper hand here. They're not as easy to use as the NGS products, but they are definitive! WOW!

Holy crap those are awesome. It looks like you found something the USGS doesn't have on their active website anymore. I can see why. Who would pay to buy maps from them when you oculd just download these huge image files. Good find!
