“There will be people who can’t distinguish that so we need to have ethical rules to make sure we as humans interact with robots in an ethical manner so we do not move our boundaries of what is acceptable.”

The Horizon Scan report argues that if ‘correctly managed’, this new world of robots’ rights could lead to increased labour output and greater prosperity.

“If granted full rights, states will be obligated to provide full social benefits to them including income support, housing and possibly robo-healthcare to fix the machines over time,” it says.

FT.com / World / UK - UK report says robots will have rights

This is pretty strange. Frankly it is a bit unsettling as well: have we lost our souls to the extent that we think a robot could have the same sentience as a human being? Is this a slippery slope, leading to a point where humanity's essence is indistinguishable from innanimate objects?

Oh, and leave it to a British government to come up with an idea like this.

Cool. Frankly I don't think this is going far enough. The government should already sponsor health care for my computers today. After all they are increasing my labour output quite substantially.

But like the article said: do you want police knocking on your door next time you hit your keyboard?

That reminds me of that movie with Will Smith...I believe it was iRobot? Something like that...anyways they had laws governing robots behavior. I could easily see that movie becoming almost like real life once robots start becoming more and more used.

Just imagine the billions of old robots that you have to keep alive and running because it would be inhumane to just scrap them.

What a load of bull...

Bah. We need robots to be an underclass so that we can exploit their labor for the betterment of mankind!

That would only happen if the robots had intelligence similar to us. Keep robots dumb and they will not rise up.

It would take more than intelligence to make them rise up. They would need to be programmed with motivation.
