RIP.

From BBC News:

Singer James Brown, known as the "Godfather of Soul", has died at the age of 73, his agent has said.

He had been admitted to hospital in Atlanta to be treated for pneumonia but died at 0145 local time (0645 GMT), said Frank Copsidas.

The star was famous for hits including I Got You (I Feel Good), Papa's Got a Brand New Bag and Living in America.

The cause of Brown's death remained unclear at this stage, Mr Copsidas told the Associated Press.

He was from a better era. I don't think we're gonna see many more performers that will have the same kind of staying power that James Brown had.

Wow, that's kinda hard to believe. I mean, I'm not much of a fan of James Brown, but his death is shocking nonetheless.

Thinking about it some more, JB created a subgenre (funk), inspired an entire genre (hip hop), and was the biggest hit maker in the history of R&B. He's easily one of the most influential figures in all of popular music.

R.I.P. Soul Brother #1, Godfather of Soul, and the Hardest Working Man in Show Business

What was better about it?

While James was a good musician... he wasn't that great of a person.

Some of the stories the ladies that came in contact with him had...

I hope he found peace before he passed on.

Talk about coincidence. I was listening to his "Please Come Home For Christmas" as I saw this thread. This is the first I heard about it and I seldom listen to his music. "Soulful Christmas" just started playing now. May he rest in soulful peace.

JB was like any other genius. He had a talent for entertaining, but he had troubles too - drugs, violence against women, etc.

That doesn't change the fact that he was one of my favorite artists when I was growing up - discovering him through the hip-hop that was inspired by him and sampled him.

RIP to the Godfather of Soul.

I've come to realize that I took it for granted that he'd be around for another few years. R.I.P. James. The world is indebted to you for your contribution to music.

Regardless of what you think of his personal life, there's no doubt that he influenced the whole world of music. He came from a seriously poor background, and became someone who changed music forever. His personal life aside, he'll go down as one of the greatest in the history of the world.

Looks (& sounds) pretty good so far...
