Nice system. But I never understood the logic behind dropping $700-800 between RAM, motherboard, CPU and graphics but settling for a case that was made in North Korea from recycled spam cans.

Huh. I heard that hackintoshes were a huge PITA whenever there was an update, and stuff never worked right all the time. Good luck though.

Stuff works absolutely perfectly until a point update comes out, and those aren't absolutely necessary. Heck, OS X runs better than Ubuntu most of the time.

Depends on the point update too. 10.4.6 and 10.4.3 were the killer ones, but 10.4.7 was really easy to install. iLife updates and that kind of thing install just like they do on a normal Mac normally.

Yeah, I never took the time to get 10.4.8 working perfectly...it was finals week and I needed my computer to work. 10.4.7 was a breeze though.

If I had a PC, I'd hide it under a desk. Who cares if it looks like crap?

So you get a less sexy iMac for $1000 less. Interesting.

Assuming you're able to install OS X and get it working in the first place, it's a PITA to update the OS and who knows if it will work with leopard.

Since I have no clue about this OSX86 stuff ... do these Frankentoshes run regular (Intel-compatible; Rosetta??) apps?

Most of the time with little or no modification. Installing an app on a OS x86 machine is much like putting Front Row on a unsupported Mac.

It's as if you have a real Mac, except for point updates. Everything else tends to work flawlessly (even quartz extreme and core image). Like I said, it works better for me than Ubuntu.

From the wiki:
"Works using MacOS X 10.4.8 DVD AMD SSE3 TEST 1. DVI with full QE/CI and resolution change"

I'm not sure what the point of your question is.

One could reasonably conclude from that statement that yes, Chess still works.

See, it's that type of crap that I don't want to deal with. I just know that if I tried to build something like this, that I might get the wrong version of the same model video card or some other crap, and honestly, I don't have the patience to deal with troubleshooting all that crap. I want a computer that just works.
If I could hire a dork to make me a hackintosh that was guaranteed to work with all the new OSX updates for the next few years, and tech support to install updates and whatnot, then I'd do it. But otherwise, that seems like a royal pain in the ass.
This writeup is enough to keep me away:

Well, it's a "commitment." It definetly can encourage feelings of hatred toward programmers and computers. I just did it for fun last summer since I was so bored.
