English: Gas cooker blows up island | Metro.co.uk
Spanish: La Gente - Incendio arrasa con la mitad de isla habitada por indígenas en Panamá - Managua, Nicaragua

This was the staggering scene after a faulty gas cooker exploded in a timber-framed shack – and devastated a tiny Caribbean island.

The blast caused an inferno that leapt from hut to hut, taking less than ten minutes to sweep across Soledad Miria.

Many of the 1,014 inhabitants dived into the sea or took to fishing boats to escape. More than a third – 348 – were injured but, amazingly, no one died.

Yeah I find it more amazing that an island that small is that crowded. Seems like any substantial size wave would just wipe it out. I would certainly be nervous living there.

Or a fire, as it were.

That's what I was thinking, but then again you could say the same thing about any land-locked shanty town too.

They should hope on those boats and head for bigger land.

Was the airport harmed?

My guess is that there are far worse smells on that island, to the point that you wouldn't notice...

Not really. It could have started at the left tip of the island and spread to the right, or it could have started nearer the middle of the island or spread to the left. Or it could have started in the middle of that destroyed area and spread evenly outwards. Et cetera.

The island is "in the Caribbean" only by courtesy-it's a coastal island just off shore of the Panamanian mainland in the San Blas archipelago. In this part of the Caribbean the tides are VERY mild and the climate is paradise-like.

Considering everyone on the island is 10 feet from the ocean in any direction I am not surprised the fire didn't get em.
