I was planning on starting this thread once the Mets signed Zito, but that was not to be! Instead, lets keep this thread as a collective place to grumble about the high price of freee agents today!
Also, I need to figure out who to put in my sig besides Wright and Reyes. Mookie, maybe? Or how about Jose Valentin's mustache....
Oh, and this story is all over the place today, it seems like the players weren't the only things juiced in 1998:
Computer-imaging firm says '98 balls were juiced

i await my season's invoice tomorrow or saturday; and then will decide if i will renew. fans use to have packages that contained perks in a 20 game version, plus opening day; a 40 game version, plus opening day or a full season. they now have changed the 20 game into a 15 or 27 game package...and only 27 (or above) guarantees opening day; the 15 game package does not.
i've had full season for a number of years; and then down to 20 game packages once i moved out of downtown (gas/parking added up compared to when i could walk living downtown).
anyway, i don't know if i will renew this year. last year was nice cause i got to see the world series. but man, i'm still paying for it. this year will be tough on the money and with other things i have planned; the tigers just may not get much from me this time. i may simply pick up individual games when i can.

Dude the Mets are screwed with that old rotation of theirs. You gotta like Philly to give them a run for the division at the very least. Then again that Zito signing was absurd.
How Endy doesn't get consideration for your sig after that catch of his I don't understand. The man's a hero to me and I'm not even a Met fan.

Well, that goes to show you how powerful Jose Valentin's mustache is, it compelled you to click on this thread and post in it, even though you really don't care much about the sport....

That is a quality mustache.
The root of my displeasure is the way in which it's impossible to channel surf and not trip over a game in the summer. Now I have to see a thread in the forum during its offseason, but I can't get enough people to keep an NBA thread alive while its in season...
Anyway, this should be the last I disturb your thread.

I wouldn't go so far to say that the Mets are screwed, but they won't be winning many games on the strength of their pitching anytime soon. Barring a big trade or two, the Mets are going to ask their young guys to step up in a big way, which is always a big gamble. If they had lost Glavine too, then they would have been screwed. He may be old, but he can still pitch.
I agree with you about Endy, and I tried real hard to get Endy's catch to fit within out sig guidelines here, but failed miserably. Maybe someone with better photoshop kung-foo skills could do better?

Nah, more about the people on this forum. If there were this many hockey fans in real life, I'd have actually met one.

Back in the day, the Mets offered a Sunday/Holiday ticket plan, which offered the option for two playoff games in a series with 4 home games, and one playoff game in a series with three home games. Back in 1986, the Mets were only 1-2 in playoff games I attended, but the game they won was made famous by this guy.
Now, going to games is such an expensive affair that even if I lived in the area, I probably would not go to more than a handful. I actually enjoy minor league games more now, since the tickets are cheaper and you're much closer to the action. But I'm going to try to make some time to go next year, to both Shea and Yankee Staduims, since they're gonna tear them both down soon....

Dude, where do you live? I gather from your post it's someplace more than 100 miles away from the Canadian border. Western NY is crawling with hockey fans, and even more are coming out of the woodwork ever since the Sabres somehow got a decent team after the strike....

Statistically, that's a fairly obvious statement...

Well, the hockey season in and around Philly probably doesn't start until the Eagles's season is done, so now your post makes more sense.

Well, I'm 3 hours from Philly, so after "E-A-G-L-E-S! EAGLES! EAGLES! EAGLES!" I get peace until local football season kicks in.

. . . And in other news Jeff Suppan heads to the Brewers for a reported 42 Million over 6 years. . .
The Cardinals are screwed this year.

Well, the latest rumor in MetLand is that we're seriously looking at signing Jeff Weaver. Maybe Tomy LaRussa thinks that he can pitch Chris Carpenter every game, so he doesn't need any more starters. Maybe he'll let Pujols pitch, since he can do everything else....

It looks like Omar thought better of getting Jeff Weaver. But now we're after.... How do you pronounce that?
ESPN.com - MLB - Sources: Schoeneweis close to 3-year deal with Mets
The Mets already have plenty of relievers. If they're planning on using this guy in the bullpen, that means they're considering some of their other bullpen talent for a trade. I can still dream of Dontrelle Willis pitching Opening Day for the Mets in April, can't I? If the Mets don't make a trade, though, do you think he would look good in my sig?
I'll be suprised if we really do sign this guy to 3 years, since the reason we didn't resign Chad Bradford was that he wanted an extra year....

It's hard to tell right now, because one key trade or free agent signing can make a huge difference in a team's outlook. I know they lost Ted Lilly this year, so even with Roy Haliday they're probably hurting for starting pitching right now, just like the Mets. I also know they've signed at least one pitcher specifically because he didn't want to pitch to Paulie LoDuca:
ESPN.com - MLB - Jays' Thomson says Lo Duca is why he didn't pick Mets
Who doesn't like Paulie? (Aside from his soon-to-be ex-wife?)
Didn't the Jays sign Frank Thomas as a DH? A Google search says Yup.
MLB.com's take on the Jays
Big Hurt, indeed....

Go Braves. I'm glad Glavine stayed in NY. He'll go 6-13 this year. Pedro won't even pitch and Zito will win 10 games.
And the Braves? Last year was an off year, but we will start a new post season streak...
Leading hitters will be....
Andruw Jones: .326, 47 HR, 136 RBI.
Chipper Jones: .315, 37 HR, 115 RBI
Adam Laroche: .296, 26 HR, 87 RBI
Jeff Francoeur: .301, 15 HR, 79 RBI
Pitchers...
John Smoltz: 19-3, 2.23 era, 287 K's, 1 no hitter
Tim Hudson: 15-4, 3.01 era, 201 K's
Mike Hampton: 17-5, 2.45 era, 226 K's

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but last year wasn't exactly an off year for the Braves. They're getting older, and the competition in the division is getting much better. Even the Nationals have improved. Whoever wins the division is in for a dogfight this year.
In any case, I'll make a note of this post and revisit it next September, OK?
Oh, and why exactly do you name your iPods, but not your Powerbook?

Only offseason news worth mentioning thus far:
HOF!!! And McGwire being shown the door for what I can only hope is a trend that will continue.

Yup, I meant to add that to the thread yesterday but the forums were iPhoned....
I was actually hoping Cal would get in on a unanimous vote, because I think he deserved it. But at least one person turned in a blank ballot, out of protest of the Steroid era. Tony Gwynn was a class act, too, and derves to be in the Hall as well!
voting results.
Four players got 0 votes, including Wally Joyner! How embarassing is that? Jay Buhner even got a vote!
Edit: Metstradamus has his finger on the real scandal in this years' HOF voting: that Bobby Bonilla somehow managed to get two votes! Are his parents baseball writers?
