Has anyone here been above the arctic circle? If so, where? I'm considering going there for a fun vacation in 2007.

Just barely, It was winter and it was colder than I thought it could get. I was there for cold weather testing of some experimental engines I was helping develop.

It was not a "fun vacation".

I've been across it twice, both times on a submarine. Got the Blue Nose Certificate to prove it! And yes, been to Norway several times. Beautiful women, great scenery, great food, and expensive as hell.

Uh you don't want to go to Barrow. I lived there for 3 years. It's an incredibly racist town with nothing at all to see.

I lived for a few years in the NWT, which is close to the arctic circle. They have awsome adventure tourism up there.

The regions within the Arctic circle are somewhat diverse. I guess the Canadian, Alaskan and Asian regions get pretty cold, without the warming effect of the Atlantic, while the parts in northern Europe have barely gotten snow this year.

Sailing around the Arctic would be interesting, now that the ice is receding. Amongst the vast stretches of uninhabited wilderness, there are all kinds of weird little towns. Michael Palin visited some during this trip.

Typically, for me, traveling up there in Finland means either having to put up with either hordes of mosquitoes and midges (summer) or neverending darkness (winter). I'm quite happy down here

Northern Midget. Northern Midge. Both seem annoying, unfortunately.

I'm considering traveling to an island off of Iceland (Grimsey) or to Lapland. Iceland is a lot closer to Minnesota than Scandinavia.

In all my life as an Icelander I've been tought Iceland was actually a part of Scandinavia. It differs a bit with who tells the story but I certainly think of Iceland as a Scandinavian country.

I do recommend going to Grímsey, if not only to say you've crossed the AC. But it is a beautiful island and the people are very very nice.

Sorry, Scandinavia refers to the Scandinavian peninsula, namely Denmark, Norway and Sweden. You can be part of our Nordic countries though

A few years ago, my father flew on a charter flight over and around Antarctica for a few hours, and the photographs he took were just amazing. The flight left from Melbourne in Australia and took most of the day to fly there, circle the land mass for a few hours and return back to Australia.

Here's a little homework for you erik: Find Denmark on the Scandinavian peninsula.

Good luck!
