TiVo announced today that it has teamed up with Roxio to offer the highly anticipated TiVoToGo support for Mac OS X. Through Toast 8 Titanium ($100), Roxio’s disc burning software for Macs, TiVo subscribers with broadband connected TiVo Series2 DVRs can transfer recorded shows to watch on their Mac, burn to a DVD, or encode and transfer to a fifth-generation iPod. Recorded content can be transferred to a Mac either one episode at a time or automatically as soon as the TiVo DVR has recorded them.

Sweet! Since I already use Toast all the bloody time, this will be a doubly nice upgrade!

Awesome! I'm getting Toast 8 just for this feature...

Do Windows users get TivoToGo for free or do they have to buy it as well?

Windows users get it for free, but I know that they have a lot of complaints about the service.

This is good news. I hope Roxio's TiVo software works as well as Toast.

Wonder if this will work on a Hacked S2 DirecTiVo?

I'm rather offended Tivo expects me to pay for this after promising it to me for over two years now (and something that's available for free to Windows users). I think I'll stick with TivoDecode Manager until it stops working.

Tivo expects all users to pay for this feature. On the windows side you have to buy MYDVD from Sonic to make DVD's and such, the same as the Toast requirement for Macs. Its not available free for Windows. However it is illegal for free...

I can confirm that this does not work on DirecTiVo's... I got the Sennheiser CX300 bundle and it was $125 total w/2nd day shipping.

I'm playing with it right now.

I shot a few "straight", but I know my DVD player can handle 480 x 480 (which is the S2 native format at high quality and is not part of the "official" DVD spec). Took about a half-hour front to back.

Right now I'm trying to reencode a 1.5GB file down to 1GB so I can fit 4 hours on a single disc. This seems like it's going to take at least 3 hours on my G4 Powerbook.

The only thing I've noticed that's weird is that Dave Zatz mentioned a "TiVo" style menu option, which AFAICT is not present.

Also, as others have said, you can watch shows on your computer for free (though the legality is hazy. TiVo doesn't seem to mind as of yet). You only need to buy Toast if you want to burn a DVD.

After dicking around with ffmpeg for about 5 or 6 hours, I have no problem at this point dropping a bill for this to just have it over and done with.

The ability to transfer videos to windows is free. I couldn't possibly care less about burning DVDs.

Great .... they come out with this AFTER I switch to DirecTV and their inferior, but Hi-def ready DVR. (nice box but it lacks so many features of the stand alone Tivo Series 2 that I can't begin to list. Hopefully they will improve the software with time.)
- iMac 3.2Ghz 1TB - MacBook Pro 15" Core i7 2.3Ghz / 256SSD (Work laptop)
- PowerMac G5 - Dual 2.0 Ghz, 3GB, Soundsticks!,
- Lenovo Thinkpad T510 (also a work laptop), Win 7 Enterprise, 8GB, 320GB HDD

What features are different/lacking?

I have the DirecTV HD/Tivo model that will be (supposedly) useless once the new satellites are working. I was wondering about the new DirecTV HD?DVR but heard mixed messages.

Speaking of which, I wonder if Tivo2Go will work with my current DirecTV HD/Tivo box. (I highly doubt it.)

It is missing one huge feature and that is dual buffers, once you switch tuners all your buffer is gone! I guess they are working on this but I sent my HR20 back for now.

I am still with SD DirecTiVos for now since I don't want to drop upwards of $1,000 on a HD DirecTiVo, that like you said is not ready for the future mpeg4. For that I would get a S3 TiVo and Comcast. These prices are insane: DIRECTV HD TiVo DVRs - HR10-250 upgraded to 30-200 HD Hours - WeaKnees.com

At least I get 9 HD Channels with my Basic Cable (have it with my cable modem) All the locals and Discovery HD. Can't record but I usually watch prime time TV life-ish.

And no, there was no way to get a DirecTiVo to work with toast... at least yet. Is your HR10-250 hacked at all?

I think you have a TIvo Series 1, so you may not miss as much as I did. But compared to the series 2 this is what's gone (and the list isn't exhaustive)

- Wish lists (With the HR20 if it's not in the guide you aren't programming it.)
- Ability to program a show by name without associating it with a time.
- Ability to program the DVR off of the web
- Ability to share programming with other DVRs in the home
- Ability to download programming content from the DVR to a PC over the home LAN
- Download content from the web (TivoCast)
- Tivo has "suggestions". (Programs it downloads that you might enjoy). Apparently this concept escaped the crack-programmers at DirecTV)
- The UI is bloody aweful on DirecTV. (To be fair, if you've never used a Tivo then it's probably nice.)

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Also to be fair here are some things the HR20 does that my Tivo can only dream about as it looks on longingly from the shelf below:

- Dual tuners.
- Ability to present shows in HD (1080i or 720p)
- Ability to upscale standard def programs to HD signals.
- Ability to record hi-def content
- The HR20 is light-years faster than the Tivo. (Newer technology so it should be)

Does this help?
- iMac 3.2Ghz 1TB - MacBook Pro 15" Core i7 2.3Ghz / 256SSD (Work laptop)
- PowerMac G5 - Dual 2.0 Ghz, 3GB, Soundsticks!,
- Lenovo Thinkpad T510 (also a work laptop), Win 7 Enterprise, 8GB, 320GB HDD

I have the HR10-250 and it's not hacked. (I guess it's Series 1?)
What upgrades/hacks are out there (besides upgrading the hard drive)
I would love for a hack that allowed it to work with the new satellite/compression scheme (mpeg4), but I doubt that'll ever happen.

I've never hacked a Tivo. I've been pretty happy with it stock.
