Anybody here mess around with airsoft guns. If so do you follow the guidelines it tells u about using certain waight bb's? I have an MP5 and i have read that the wrong waight bb's can skrew up ur hop up system. And also what is your take on Airsoft as a sport.

I want one just cause they're cool looking. I'm not a 15 year old asking for a sword so I think that's alright.
I was on their site the other day for like an hour, browsing. I'm gonna laser scope it and crawl around my tiny backyard.

I appear to be the resident Airsoft guy here.
I have been playing for a number of years now and have owned quite a few different AEG's, Pistols and single-shot rifles.
It is unwise to use anything less than 0.2 g BB's. The .17g and less ones you find are just plain rubbish. The only way I could see it ruining the hop-up system is due to poorly made BB's which jam.
The main problem with all the MP5 derivatives is they often have problems with their fire selectors and won't fine on single.
I think the sport is great. Cheap to play (once you own the kit) compared to Paintball due to the ammo being so much cheaper and not having to use gas. It attracts different kinds of players compared to Paintball as it is billed as being more realistic.
Many of the naysayers will say that it is stupid to try and be all realistic but I think that if one can find the right balance between realism and fun, it is a superb sport. I much prefer it to paintball due to the increased accuracy, less of a class structure (people with money to burn can fire a whole lot more paintballs compared to someone strapped for cash) and the realistic weapons and function such as mag changes etc.
Like any sport, there will be some wankers who can ruin it for others but overall I have found it to be great.

So wait, you guys shoot each other with these things? All padded up and such?
How do these feel on unprotected flesh? Just like a typical BB gun?

Meh. Airsoft to me is a ghetto/unregulated/crappy hardware way to play paintball. I'd rather go paintballing.

All I wear is Auscam (Australian Camouflage gear) and a pair of safety goggles. I don't understand padding. It can leave a nice little welt when hit on a tender area but these go down after a little bit. Hurts much less than paint ball. 0.2 gram ball rather than a 3.0+ gram ball at the same speeds will tend to hurt less.
Much more accurate as well.
Depends where you play regarding unregulated. I would say it is the complete opposite here in the UK. Most (not all) paintball places are the sort of places you get parties and stag dos whereas most (again not all) Airsoft places are more for regulars. The two sites I play at have much less cheating and a much better atmosphere than the few Paintball places I have played at. That is my experience anyway.
As for the equiptment, I think the gear is great. Looks much better, more accurate, more realistic than paintball stuff. Obviously there is some poor quality stuff as well, just like anything. Obviously, some people don't want a game such as this to be realistic etc so there is plenty of room for both Airsoft and Paintball.
I can play Airsoft a number of times for the same amount of money as playing Paintball. Roughly 25 quid for 500 paintballs over here opposed to about 6 quid for 5,000 airsoft bb's.

5,000 rounds? I thought you said it was about being realistic. I play paintball with 2 10 round clips.

SURE DO it isnt to bad to be shot with just a tshirt on though it does depend on what kind of gun u r using. I would say it hurts a little less than a bb gun but i got shot in the chest last week and it has left a nice welt.

neverskate, what type of mp5 do you have?
jebjeb ur not alone. i too am an airsoft head. my marui based custom sr16 just broke so i picked up an upgraded sig552 seals. lookin forward to it being delivered. we have 30-50 regulars each weekend at the place i frequent. its a great time.
center channel, airsoft is much cheaper and draws a very different crowd. it lends itself to military simulation play much better than paintball. ive played all types of paintball and retired two years ago from semi professional xball and 7man. i didnt like the people in the business anymore. as it became more commercialized, but just as unregulated, people became worse a$$holes. i used to play paintball in the woods with my 10 round pistol with 12gram co2 cartriges and it was a blast, but trust me, airsoft is just as fun in those situations although much cheaper.

sophomore year in college, my housemates and i went on four of these things (think they were like $15 a piece, obviously not top of the line but they were dead accurate)-
they'd leave a welt, but it really wasn't that bad to get shot by them, only times it really hurt was the ceremonial (i have NO idea why) pelting in the shins of a severely hungover housemate. THAT hurt like a bitch, but i think it was more of a reflection on the state of the peltee.

those 15 dollar guns shoot about 120 feet per second and you cock for each shot.
the guns most people use for playing shoot 250-400 feet per second and are select fire, shooting between 10-20 rounds per second in full auto.

Ha!
Actually, no one drinks Fosters in Australia as, firstly, no pub really sells it and, secondly, it is shite. Over here, it is a little better though.
Funny thing is, Auscam is more effective in most British bush than the British DPM. Or maybe my convict heritage makes me better at hiding then you Poms
Auscam - one can see why lots of people call it "Jelly bean cam". For the observeant (or mildly deranged) among you, you may notice the little dark brown bunny hiding being a light brown bush in the centre area between the top pockets in this particular example. Hehe.

It's not about the looks, it is what works better for the terrain one is in. I find Auscam to be fantastic, particularly if it is a bit dry or lots of dead leaves around.

Another "actual" airsoft player here. Own several TM and CA aegs and gbbs, play with a bunch of guys here in New England and also some of the bigger events (200+) here. In my eyes, there's airsoft, and then there's airsoft. Most people buy 15 dollar springers and run around in their yard. Others, such as myself, wear military authentic gear and it is more of a simulation than a game. How's the UK airsoft, what do you usually get for a turnout at events?

I play at one of the smaller sites but we still get between 30 and 70 people every 2nd Saturday. Have played at sites with over 200 (not that good really), weekenders with around 300 people (pretty wild with tanks and choppers and stuff) but prefer the smaller, near-private games with around 8 a side. You can get pretty strategic then.

My gear changes quite a bit but this is some of the stuff I generally stick with.
Pistol: M92F
Main: AK74M - I use this the most as it is nice a reliable and a bit different to all the M16 variants that most people use.
Between my brother and I though, we have lots of different weapons which we trade around. At the moment, this is some of the stuff we have.
MP5K - Had both Gas Blowback and AEG (Electric).

P90

Steyr AUG - Used to run a Military (fixed scope) version of these all the time. The Aussie forces use these.

M4

Thompson

Minimi - Currently we use this as our support weapon

M60 - Had to have one once but notoriously unreliable. Good fun though...
Have had numerous single shot "sniper" rifles before but when they started enforcing the FPS rule here (some sites will allow up to 370FPS but it is generally 328+5%). Now there is no use having the bolt-action rifles as the AEG's can fire at just the same FPS.
My brother has gone pretty crazy with all of this and generally has around 8-10 weapons in his "arsenal" at any one time. He mainly likes doing the trading and collecting as well as playing though.
Now before you think I am too crazy, I only ever take one pistol and one rifle out on the field. There is nothing more fun than shooting some plonker who has guns hanging off both shoulders, his back and in his arms!
