I had never heard about this until I read a CNN article, but I've got to be thinking that if I had been tracking some viral video thing online and it turned out to be an ad for Windows Vista, I would be pretty ticked off.
Microsoft has made several successful ARGs. If they are well executed they can go above and beyond the actual product it "advertises". See A.I. and The Beast.
