I just picked up an Xserve G4 dual 1.33 from the office, essentially for free as we long since put it to pasture. I am thinking of adding a 500gb hard drive and using this as a content server throughout the house. My only problem is that the thing is so loud! My house is wireless with only one room having actualy Rj45 cables running to my fiber connection. That room is my office and this thing is way too loud to use in that area.

Any thoughts on some sort of wireless option before I start pulling cable?

It's got a USB port, use it.

It should also have some form of PCI - see if you can find the right chipset so it's compatible with AirPort software. There should be a list somewhere.

You should have an open PCI slot. Do what Mister Elf says.

Yeah, those G4s were LOUD. The G5 XServe was whisper quiet in comparison. I haven't heard the Intel one yet. Hopefully they're not as loud as the Dells, those are louder than the G4 XServe. They sound like jets taking off... then crashing. I swear, you can hear people crying in agonizing pain. Or it could just be the whining fans. Anyway, Dells are really loud.

Use it to hold doors open.

Or to keep your papers from flying away when you open the window.

Why not use it to backup files? You only need to turn it on occasionally.
