I am planning on steam cleaning my carpets before some new furniture is delivered. I figured it's a good time with an empty room. I was thinking of going to home deopt and renting a machine rug dr i believe is what they have. Do these work good? any prep work needed to be done? do they dry fast? am i better hiring a carpet cleaning company? I don't want to spend too much money. Thanks in advance.

I've had varying success with the rental machines. If you want a good one, HD might be the place. We've got a cheapo cleaner at home (a Hoover, really cheap) that works OK, although the "wand" and attachements are useless.
Spot treatment for stains works well, I've used the Hoover brand.
As for drying times, it takes a couple of days unless you're going to just go back over and over it without cleaning fluid. Some machines won't let you do that, so you're at the mercy of humidity and ventilation. Most times floors are dry "enough" after 12 or so hours, but that doesn't always mean they're really dry. If you have wood feet on the furniture, that might be too soon.

Hardwood floors here too. I've done steam cleaning myself though... I'd just hitup craigslist and buy a used bissel steam cleaner for $50-150 bucks, and have the steam cleaner from then on. It's handy when cleaning any carpet, evne automotive carpets.
