Looks like there are some things that aren't more expensive in canada.

Strangely enough, much of it is because of lower oil prices.

As the oil prices have dropped, so has the value of the CAD$ vs the US$.

Buying songs on the iTMS is also cheaper in Canada.

We just had lunch at Mother's Dumplings. The bill, for three, came to $20.00 including tip.

I'll have to check that out. I went looking for it the other day and ended up at the dumpling place right beside it. I was told that there was a good dumpling place on Huron, just north of Dundas, and ended up in the wrong restaurant. The one I went to was very good, but the place is a total hole in the wall.

I'll get to Mother's Dumplings soon enough though. I trust it's a little nicer inside?

Mother's Dumplings rocks. It' like sitting in your mom's kitchen, except there's more tables. Try and sit in the back room, where all the cooking happens. Don't expect fine dining, it's a small Chinese cafe but clean and tidy.

We had a large bowl of freshly made thick wheat noodles in a beef broth and two kind of dumplings. Enough to generously feed three people.

Do they take into account sales tax in each country?

It doesn't say, but I betcha they don't.

The Canada price is only $4 cheaper then the US for the US$149 2GB nano. Since the US price doesn't include any tax from any state, Canada might not contain the 17% GST.

Without tax, the comparisons are meaningless. At least in the US, I can buy from Amazon tax free. I don't know about mail order in Canada (and tax). Any Canucks here that can? (Eh?)

GST is 6%. Some provinces have PST as well though. Alberta doesn't.

You can order movies and books from Amazon.com in the US, but you can't order iPods from there. I ordered some HD DVDs from Amazon.com, because Amazon.com usually has better prices than Amazon.ca (although shipping from Amazon.com is more expensive).

GST (Good and Services Tax) in Canada is 6%, not 17%. However, the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) ranges from no PST in Alberta (oil riches) to 10% in PEI.

Edit: Beaten to it.

Shows you what I know about Canada! And I live near Detroit!

Was the tax burden in Ontario/Windsor ever near 17%? For some reason that's the number that sticks out in my head. Michigan sales tax is 6%. Does Ontario charge other taxes on top of the 6% GST?

GST is 6% and Ontario PST is 8%. GST was 7% last year. So, this year, the total is 14%, and last year it was 15%.

The strange part is that if I order HD DVDs from Amazon.com in the US, the tax I pay is exactly 0. I don't know why. Usually customs will let cross-border orders go if it's say a $20 order, but usually orders over $20-30 means I have to pay tax. However, not with Amazon.com HD DVD orders, regardless of how much I spend.

P.S. There are some differences in pricing practices for upgrades for Macs too. In the US, the pricing for the 24" iMac 7600GT CTO upgrade is US$125, but in Canada it's only CAD$90 (US$77).
