so I sell these speakers and a controller to this kid on eBay. Perfectly great set, nothing wrong with them when I send them off. He e-mails me today complaining of hissing and a tear in one of the speaker cones. I tell him that the hissing might be caused by a bad power source, and that there was no tear in the cone when I shipped it off, and that it either happened during shipping or that some how the tear happened when he was handling the speakers. He replies very angrily that I have "cheated him" (in a long winded e-mail that I just summarized.)
any who, my response to him was that I wouldn't be replying to anymore of his e-mails, and that what he was doing was not cool. I go to my eBay and sure enough he has given me a negative feedback. and ya know what? I DON'T CARE. So talon1041, if you read this, I'm laughing at you right now. I was going to refund part of the shipping cost, but since you were such a jerk about the entire thing I won't.

Do you suggest that he buy shipping insurance to begin with?

When I do auctions, I always recommend it. Shipping companies have a tendancy to destroy things.

the first $100 with ups (or is it usps, whichever I used) is included free of charge, and is included without question. I even made sure of this.

update:
the kid decided to do a damaged item on arrival ticket. meaning that UPS came to house and picked up the package, and now it's on the way back to the store I shipped it from. I'm in Boston now. well, thing is, since UPS didn't notify the shipping store nor me for that matter about what's going on, there's no way to have it taken back to the kids house. so, if he still wants the speakers back, he'll have to cash out another shipping charge. if he refuses, then the only think i can think of to be moral is to just trash the speakers, since they are technically the kids speakers.

any ideas?

Yeah, sell it on craigslist next time. I'ts only local, but you don't have to deal with PayPal/shipping headaches. I find I usually break even with what I could have gotten on ebay (after taking shipping and annoyance like this into account), and it takes much less time.

I once bought a paintball gun on ebay. Description said silver but it was black when I got it. Said 3 day shipping. Took 3 weeks. I left him negative feedback cause it was the wrong color and took too long. He left me negative feedback saying I demanded shipping before he got the check. I paid via paypal 5 minutes after the auction ended and have a timestamped receipt.

I even called him and he said, "You leave me negative feedback, I leave you negative feedback."

Real mature.

In the end he got kick off ebay, but his negative feedback still exists.

That depends. He could beat up the box before turning it in. Who would know ?

Sometimes I require insurance from the USPS and then make the buyer take it to the post office to complain.

Other times I simply state in all my auctions the item is "as-is".

I also have a bookmark to ban certain bidders if they look at me funny.

the as is thing i will do in all my auctions from now on. speakers can be finicky things if moved around in a way they don't like. even though i packed them very very well so they wouldn't move at all inside the box. oh well. I'll update when the kid e-mails me back about the returning shipping cost.

I'd post in the ebay community board, someone will know what to do. I'm going to have to do that tonight. I won this amplifier:

eBay: TECHNICS SU-7300 150 WATT AMPLIFIER RARE 1980'S MODEL (item 140069161769 end time Jan-04-07 13:22:58 PST)

And the ****ing moron packed it in ONE SINGLE layer of the 'tiny' bubblewrap...then cut up a cardboard box and taped it aroudn the thing. There wasn't any padding anywhere... the corners are smashed in, all the toggles are bent, and the power toggle switch is just mashed inwards and disgusting looking. What a ****ing moron. Even if he gives me all my money back I'm still going to be pissed that this guy ruined a nice piece of equipment that, up until it met him, lasted almost 30 years working fine.
