Intel is announcing that its first full CPU built using the new 45nm high-k + metal gate transistors is not only up and running but has also booted four OSes. The very first packaged Penryn silicon from the very first wafer booted Windows Vista, Mac OS X, Windows XP and Linux on the first try.

45 nm process
dual-core (or quad)
6 MB L2 cache
410 million transistors
SSE4
? clockspeed

I look forward to it, although I'd like a 4.5 lb 12" 1152x854 MacBook with Leopard and 802.11n even more.

BTW, is Apple still targeting SSE2? My understanding is that all x86 Macs are capable of SSE3. Or does most Apple software just throw in an extra SSE3 detection scheme?

I believe Apple is targeting SSE3. Don't hold me to it though.

Regarding what I would love to see... I think a 10" 1024x768 sub-notebook (remove the optical drive and make the battery optional [optional as in you can take the computer with you without the battery and it still looks like a normal computer])

I own a 12" iBook and while it's very portable, I would love to see portable go to the extreme a bit without the price being 2-3 times as much as with Sony.

oh you will. the next decrease in size will be when they start using flash drives instead of platter based drives. a huge power saver too.

i've seen some flash drives up to 20gb now; won't be too long.

That 128 GB flash drive probably costs about a bazillion bux.

Re: SSE4

Intel's guidance for Penryn claims the family will feature "New Intel SSE4 instructions expand capabilities and performance for media/HPC applications."

When asked about the effects of SSE4 on Penryn, Smith responded to DailyTech claiming "We're seeing excellent double digit performance [percentage] gains on multimedia applications."

Mmm, sexy.

And no, not all (or even most) Apple programs are targeting SSE3, though the OS itself does in a few areas. With a few hacks, OS X runs well on any SSE2-capable CPU.
