recordonline.com - The Monticello miracle: Freak racetrack accident restores vision

What an amazing story. Imagine being blind in one eye for 64 years from a blunt force trauma only to regain it from another blunt force trauma. Quite a stroke of luck for the fellow.

Sound like something out of a Scoooby Doo episode. Lost your memory from a knock on the noggin? Just slam your head into another wall, cured!

This can easily happen if the optic nerve becomes detached then, at a later point is nudged back into place I suppose...

Doesn't an optic nerve rip when it becomes detached?

imagine having a loose connection on your optic nerve? man, the thought of sitting in a restaurant watching someone smacking the side of their head the way i used to smack the side of our SE/30 when the CRT was failing is pretty damned entertaining.

If the optic nerve becomes detached, it's permanent, period. Usually this sort of blunt-force induced blindness comes from a small clot in the brain that impedes signaling from the optic nerve, through the optic chiasm and optic radiations to the occipital lobe where the primary visual cortex is located. Knowing the specific impairment to the guy's vision ("blind" just doesn't cut it, because it could have been an impairment in any of the four fields in each eye and still be called "blindness") would help identify where the lesion was.

The amazing part is that, 60+ years later the clot was dislodged and the signaling was restored. Usually if too long passes the nerve and/or its association areas wither and stop functioning.

Somehow I doubt that the mechanism in this case was dislodging a clot 60 years after the fact. There would be permanent damage several minutes without oxygen, let alone years. Also, CT or angiogram would have shown the clot.

I'll have to think about it more before I come up with my own hypothesis though
