Hello MacNN, I beseech you to digg this story:
http://digg.com/environment/TOMORROW...ff_Your_Lights

Why do it? Simply to get the attention of the media and politicians. Thanks!

I remember a Simpsons epsiode where Lisa got them to turn off the lights and all the crooks went wild, looting and pillaging.

I'm a bird. I am the 1% (of pets).

Yeah it was "re-capping" all of the first line of my post. But subsequent lines were left alone. I hope thats a bug and not a feature.

I don't get it. You honestly think that politicians and the media is going to care that you're sitting in your home in the dark with the shades pulled down? How is your neighborhood going to look any different than it does any other night? What are the videographers and photographers with the media supposed to show their viewers/readers? A dark screen or a black five column photo? Ooooh...imagine the shocked public rallying in outrage of witnessing (or not witnessing as the case may be) this "global event".

Do people need to pay attention to the environment? Yes.

Is this dumb? Yes.

More like the hopes that they can photograph skyscrapers in NY with all its lights off, that'd be pretty awesome actually. And even if they don't have impressive photographs to show, the story itself is enough to "raise politician's awareness".

Is this dumb? Yes.

But speaking seriously for a moment, I don't think this is dumb at all, it's a good thing that more and more people are finally trying to *do* something about global warming. Sure, they're not scientists so they can't come up with an actual fix, but by simply getting the word out they can force politicians into action. That's how all progress is made in a democratic country like ours.

A more appropriate "event" would have supporters pull their automobiles to the curb, turn on the hazards and turn the car off for five minutes. With enough supporters, it's very visual and interesting. It's very public and obvious. And it also stops car emissions from supporters for five minutes. Not a huge impact, but at least it makes an obvious statement.

I think you're dumb. So hah!
Touché!

Granted I don't have a facebook account so I can't read the article but..

What in the world do lights and global warming have in common? I don't get it. Are our lights generating so much heat that if we all turn them off for the evening we'll reverse the effects of global warming or something? I think not.

Energy conservation awareness? Sure. Global warming awareness? Uh, no, not so much.

Sure, you'll get the attention of the media and politicians. They'll all be laughing at you while you sit in the dark in the middle of winter.

Incandescent lights use significantly more power than compact-flourescent lights. If everyone in the US stopped used incandescents, it would significantly reduce the power generation requirements of the US which would therefore significantly reduce our need for oil, coal, and other dirty/politically questionable energy sources.

Its called the trickle down effect. Every watt of power we use throughout our day, each and every day, comes from somewhere. Our power plants generate the power and distribute it to us. Our power plants get the energy from fossil fuels, etc. So, if we reduce the power we all use every day, the power plants distribute less energy, which means less fossil fuels are used. The burning of fossil fuels is a major contributer to Global Warming. Its not just our cars, its everything we do. And every little bit of conservation will help, as long as a lot of people do it.

Of course this event wont save the world, but its meant to raise awareness. It definitely can do that.

People reading digg and macnn do not have the control of skyscrapers. Maintenance workers in these buildings do, and won't do it because they don't want to get fired for making these buildings unsafe.

Funny you mention that.

California is proposing to make it illegal to use incandesent bulbs.

I've purchased flourescent lights, but I gave them all away. I hated them. The light was greenish/blueish white, and they were not very bright, plus they took a bit to turn on, and randomly they just woudln't turn on. I much prefer regular incandescents and keeping lights off in the rooms I'm not in.

Depends on which ones you get, some are quite nice. I'm currently in a dorm that uses 4 long-thin ones and encloses them in a translucent plastic shielding thing to evenly disperse the light.

Yeah... those aren't something you can screw into a regular lightbulb socket though. Besides, I lived in dorms like that also... and those lights sucked too. Everybody bought lamps... much better mood lighting anyway.

Why don't people listen to the Global Warming people?

You talk down to people. Knock it off, it's really annoying and makes people feel stupid. When you make people feel stupid you make them angry. Angry people don't listen to anyone.

And California is very quickly starting to look like a police state. I'll let you keep your socialist ideals (that are starting to look a bit heavy handed)

Per my religion, I spend one 24 hour period a week with most the lights off, only walking places, not turning on any new lights and being a gentle to the Earth as possible.

I just recently replaced some of the incandescent lights we inherited in our condo with CFLs. I find that I actually like the better. At least in some situations. Our kitchen light was severely underpowered, so I put a 100w equivalent (actually only uses like 35w or something) in, and now the kitchen is plenty bright. same goes for my office, and the entry way. The only places we ended up sticking with the incandescents are the dining room and bedroom because the CFLs we got aren't suitable to be used in a dimmer.

But, having replaced 5 bulbs, we've already significantly reduced the electricity we use for lighting.

I switched everything to CFLs a year or so ago. I have been replacing them far more often than I have any incandescent bulbs. And the base of them is usually pretty hot when the burn out.

What kind are you using? How long do they say their supposed to last for? I hope that's not going to happen with the ones that I got. :/
