A nursing home patient wielding a hand saw slashed a fellow resident, cut a worker and scraped a police officer Tuesday in a rampage that ended when he was subdued with a stun gun, authorities said.

David J. Cooper, 53, of Petaluma was jailed on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a police officer at Sunrise Assisted Living after seriously injuring a woman who lived there.

Officers found the woman in the lobby with head wounds when they arrived at about 1:30 a.m. Cooper was nearby with a wood-handled tree-trimming hand saw, said Petaluma police Sgt. Matthew Stapleton.

As police closed in on Cooper, he threw a wheelchair down a stairwell at them and tossed his saw at an officer. Police fired bean bags and used a Taser to subdue him.

Cooper and an employee injured in the struggle were treated for minor injuries.

An appropriate and legitimate reason to use a stun gun. The guy was subdued and there were no further injuries.

Though I wonder why he is in a nursing home at age 53. That seems to be pretty young.

When I picture a nursing home patient, I don't picture someone capable of throwing a wheelchair down a stairwell. Sounds like didn't want to be there. Hope he likes jail better.

Same here. Though, often people who "aren't all there" are considerably strong. I believe the requirement to go into a nursing home is not being able to perform two ADL's.

There are many reasons someone of that age and physical strength might need assistance in living.

And then pulls them over his head.

Which explained his rage at the resident he cut. Apparently she forgot she wasn't supposed to call him by the nickname no one dared use when talking to him, "poop head." This was especially the case when he drank too much and got poop faced. A staff member says the wounded resident was calling him to join her and some others for a game of canasta when she started to call him "Poop..." And when he asked her to repeat what she'd called him she tried to change it to sound like she'd said, "Cooper" but the second time it came out "Pooper" and that's when Cooper lost control.
