Liverpool Chases the American Dream
Liverpool's new American owners have thrown down the gauntlet to Manchester United and Chelsea by promising to make the club the biggest and best in the world.
Tom Hicks and George Gillett laid out their vision for a bright Red future at an Anfield news conference little more than an hour after clinching an historic £470million takeover of the club.
They will be in direct competition with fellow Americans the Glazer family but, unlike the owners at Old Trafford, the two sports tycoons insist there will be no debt tied to Liverpool from their purchase.
What do you Premiership fans think of this?
They've maintained that they won't destroy the traditions of Liverpool, but is there going to be a negative reaction from the Liverpool fans like there was when Glazer took over ManU? I'm just wondering, because no one over here talks about this stuff.

I just hope they cop as much stick as Chelsea have for having a large forgein investor.
All we ever hear about is, Roman's bloody rubles! Theres nary a whisper about ManUSA and the Glazers paying over the top for players, but if Chelsea do it, heavens forbid! You tell me who was the better buy, Michael Carrick for 18m, or Michael Essien for 24m? Essien's light years ahead and is absolute steal at that price compared to Carrick.
And what traditions do the bin dippers have to lose anyway? Signing the one song repeatedly and pushing over ambulances?

It's on big deal. Only thing that'll change is they'll have NASCAR and Budweiser patched on their shirts. I can't see any football players objecting to that.

From what I've seen most Liverpool fans are quite happy with it. Liverpool has been looking for investors for quite some time and Moores (former owner) has told several investors to fekk off because they simply weren't right for the team. I watched the press conference yesterday and those two (Gillett and Hicks) at least talk right about what they are going to do.
Do you Americans have any info on the new owners? Because I know very little about them (only that they own some teams in the US etc).

There's a difference between throwing money on a team that has no history of being succesful and using money a succesful team has made itself by simply being succesful. Chelsea have bought success. And as much as I hate ManUtd at least they have used their own success to become rich and more succesful.
And while comparing players, Carrick for 18m, Essien (the little thug) for 24m or Gerrard for free? Not a question of what is the best "buy".
As for tradition. 5 European Cups, 3 UEFA Cups, 3 Super Cups, 18 league titles, 7 FA Cups, 7 League Cups and 15 Charity Shields (a total of 58 Cups) is more tradition than Roman can ever dream of buying. Then we have Shankly, the Boot Room, This is Anfield, the Kop and the list goes on of things known by any real football fan. It's a tradition of winning and being the most successful team in England.
Compare that to Chelsea with their 0 European Cups, 2 UEFA Cups, 1 Super Cup, 3 League Titles, 3 FA Cups, 3 League Cups and 3 Charity Shields (a total of 15). 4 of those titles (2 of the league titles) came after Roman started throwing his stolen rubles at the team. What will happen if he'll walk away today? Chelsea goes bankrupt within an hour.
Teams like Chelsea will be in our shadow no matter how much money Roman will throw at the problem. I just hope he continues to buy the favourite players of his children. Worked wonders with Sheva!

As for Sayf's question, I don't know a ton about the owners except they're filthy rich, and for some reason adore owning sports teams. Gillett made his money in sports franchises, ski resorts, and meat production. Hicks co-founded an investment firm, owns and operates Southwest Sports Group, and is worth $725,000,000.
I just found this out about Hicks.
Hicks is presently a member of the political action committee for the 2008 presidential election campaign for former Republican Mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani.

Alonso. Better than both and half the price.

One song? Do you have any idea about the football club or are you another one of these "say anything that the ignorant might be swayed by"?
Liverpool, not only the most successful club in England but also widely regarded to have the best fans in the game.

I just found this out about Hicks.
That's about as much as I have found out as well. But I kind of like that. They don't seem to be trying to get into the news and seem to be quite likable blokes (at least Gillett).
Longest url in the world......
Now it's just Arsenal left of the big three who is owned by people from England. I sort of hope they remain that way. Can't have yanks owning all the big clubs!
