Last nights (here in the UK) Top Gear was quite amusing. Firstly, I am glad that they appear to have realised that they are more of an entertainment show rather than a serious car reviewing one. I have always been annoyed at Top Gear for their cruddy reporting, sensationalism and idea that if a car can go sideways on the track then it must be good. But enough of that.
The episode was a full hour story about a couple of weeks in the states where they had to buy a car for under $1000, do a few tasks and drive to New Orleans.
Most of it was pretty funny, some of it in a Borat kind of way. However, even though I didn't take offense to it, I can see a number of parts that there will be complaints about. I give them credit for having the balls to it but I know that there will be something on the BBC soon saying how many complaints were made to Ofcom regarding the show. So I guess I am predicting the "why are we spending out licence money on this rubbish" complaints here in the UK.
I did love the dead cow on top of the Camaro though. I can see that the vegos may have a problem with that, particularly when he did the sharp reverse turn to roll it off the roof!
I am sure it is up on YouTube now for you US guys to have a gander.

With all due respect, my good man, it would appear that it's you who's finally discovered that they're an entertainment show, not a car review show. I've seen those boring Oz car review shows on Channel 5 in the wee hours (wedged in between the Oz V8 and truck racing), so I know where you're coming from.

I lol'ed.
And had a proper belly laugh at Jezza's liquid air conditioning.

I watched it lastnight, it was good and funny stuff, but I can see how more 'sensitive' people are going to get offended. It is an entertainment show with cars in it now, not a sensible car review programme, and its great that way.
People used to be able to say that Top Gear was the entertainment and the 5th Gear programme on Channel 5 was what Top Gear used to be (it was all the old Top Gear presenters except Clarkson, doing what Top Gear used to be), but I caught one of the last series of 5th Gear, and its lost the plot, they are trying to be new Top Gear, but on the cheap, and it didn't work.

This only goes to confirm my decision not to travel to the USA anymore.
What happened to 'Freedom of speech', it is nothing but hypocrisy and arrogance from the USA.
In 100 years time, people will look back in history and see how the USA destroyed the world through :-
Arrogance, Ignorance, Greed, Xenophobia, Selfishness and most importantly the lack of respect for other Human Beings.
The best example being the terrible state that still exists in New Orleans, why do the rest of the American public let this happen to their so called 'countrymen' - easy "It's not in my backyard". That used to be the case when a disaster happened somewhere outside the USA, they never usually notice, not it happens on US soil and they also lose interest in other peoples suffering.
Only when a 9/11 incident happens do they 'publicly suffer' and milk it for all it is worth.
I travelled to the USA many times in my past and I have many great friends there, but it is turning into the nastiest place on earth, selfish, self-indulgent and vile.

Well done for pulling me up on the way I worded that . I guess it was my way of saying "I hope this stops people on the internerd quoting Top Gear as if it was a legitimate car reviewing medium". Sadly there have been a number of people on MacNN that have been guilty of that.
Damn me for being passive aggressive

Also, Parky: please don't derail this into a Political thing. There is a reason there is a political lounge and why I don't visit it.

That's a bit harsh, don't you think? I mean, similar statements could easily be made about the UK. Friday night yobs in most major cities, the poverty gap growing by the day, no environmental policies worth talking about - when I lived in London recycling was virtually unheard of, just as an example).
If you live in Europe it's easy to forget just how large a country the US is.

As Clarkson said, how can the rest of America sleep at night knowing that New Orleans is in this mess ? It was pretty shocking, and a sad indictment of the richest nation on earth.
And those Hicks were scary !
FWIW, I love the west coast of the USA, and everybody I met whilst travelling over there was extremely polite and genuine. I think the rest of the world tends to forget that some parts of the USA are less 'united' than others...

When did you live here ? In the 1970s ?
Most local councils have kerbside recycling programs now, and there's even talk of fining you if you don't recycle. The UK is way ahead of most of the USA in this regard.
The poverty gap ? The rich certainly keep getting richer, but there really isn't an underclass of extremely poor in the UK - our welfare system makes sure that you can't fall out of the net, unlike the USA where you're on your own.
Yobs - er. Yup, here you have a point. It's pretty bad, and getting worse. But at least it's still pretty rare for them to have the kind of armament you have in the USA.

Right. Remember when they made the boat cars?
They "sailed" them about five miles away from me. On the journey there, they couldn't possibly have encountered the obstacles they did unless they were actively seeking them (and Gee4orce, if you're in North Staffs rather than South you'll know exactly what I'm saying - the low bridge by Stoke Station which May got stuck under is nowhere near their route between Keele and Rudyard. Not to mention that they actually wouldn't have hit Keele getting off at the M6 junction they did).
So, it's an entertainment show in which some parts are set up for entertainment value. All you whiners get over yourselves. Especially you people with Moss Side on your doorstep.

Yep. And how do they know you haven't been recycling? By snooping in your bins. Very 1984.

Yeah. Most of that recycled stuff ends up in barges destined for Chinese landfill.

Yeah, those people getting the free cars looked like they'd gone hungry a time or two.
