My girlfriend went to school with some dude who was on The Real World. I think it was like Real World 10 or some crap. Not one of the better early ones.

I used to work with a girl that was on some boat related reality show that was filmed in Miami. Don't know what the show was called though.

RW 10 ("Back to New York") was in deed crap. It was the worst season I've ever seen. (I'll shamefully admit to seeing every season until I stopped watching when they were in Philly.)

Were Kaia and Matt really as loathsome as they seemed?

Yes. Dusty from Amazing Race is my mom's best friend's daughter. I've hung out with her quite a bit, at least when I lived in Washington.

Quite a few people from 'round here have been in and on a number of those shows. I also have an ex-girl who's been on Fifth Wheel and a few other shows and a couple LA friends that write the scripts.

Yes, those are virtually all scripted and as far from reality as you can get. Scenes are shot and re-shot with suggestions and direction from PAs and Directors. For instance, The Fifth Wheel girl, she's 5'11", thin, hot, stacked...they told her exactly what to wear and said "you're gonna play the bitchy slutty one, do everything you can to piss off the other girls, bonus if you can get them to fight you". Bo-ring.

The Amazing Race is one of the few thats almost complete reality.

My SFSU professor was in Jeopardy years ago. One time, he showed us a video recording his family made of him while he was on the show. Needless to say, we were all surprised. So I guess it is still not as likely that, if you asked any 10 random people, you'd find somebody who knows somebody else who's been on TV.

Don't bully me, I got an Uzi... HOO-HAH!

I'd be hard pressed to find anyone who's NOT been on TV. Seriously.

No, but I did produce an audition tape for a friend who wanted to be on Survivor. It was quite god actually, not sure why they didn't take her. I'm sure they try to get the mix right and I guess she didn't fit. The tape was not sensational, I did it in iMovie/DVD, but she has character and I really thought we had it.

Selecting people for reality shows is based on archetypes. You want your Bitch, your Slut, your Nice Guy, your Nice Girl, your Experienced Outdoorsy Guy, your All-rounder, your Gay, your Ethnic, your Ditzy. etc. etc.

They have a set number of categories which are filled by the person who best fills the criteria they are looking for.

And yes, the mix is always selected to create the most tension, fights and dramas.

My cousin created one for MTV, but she wasn't on it. Her production company does Prison Break.

I probably know someone who was on COPS, but I don't watch it.

I always wished they had done American Idol 10 years earlier. "I couldda been a contendah"

Actually, I'm not sure what the current story is, but a friend of mine in California was at one point going to have her own reality show. They even shot a pilot episode to pitch to networks. Hopefully it'll become a reality, there won't need to be any scripting for insane drama in this show...

Unfortunately, I do.

Noah from Road Rules, all the guys who did the MTV Mardi Gras special, the two girls who did the MTV Spring Break cruise episode, all 3 girls who did one of the MTV Cancun episodes. That's just people i hung out with in college. Needless to say I know several people who work for Viacom and MTV or have a relative who do.

From going out here in the city Jen Schiff and Megan Hauserman have floated across our social circle at one point or another. And I met Ryan Sutter at my friend’s bachelor party because they worked at the same firehouse in CO.

With so many reality shows its hard to throw a rock and not hit someone who’s been in one or auditioned for one.
