OK, I have a set of 30 compressed documentaries in H.264 (.mp4) format that I made using handbreak. I want to make a DVD with them for a friend, but most TV DVD players more tan 2 years old do not support this format.

Which compressed format would you recommend (the most universally accepted .avi, divix, etc)? and which softwate to do the task?

I run OS X tiger on a Macbook.

The only video format a regular DVD player supports is DVD-Video (which uses MPEG2 compression, but you can't just dump the files on disk). You can use iDVD to create Video-DVDs.

Thanks TETENAL,

I already knew that, moving all 30 movies to MPEG-2 would cost me around 10 DVDs, the rendering, the burning, it would take way too much time and effort.

There are a bunch of DVD players out there that support compressed video in a DVD disc, I just wonder which one is the most popular Dvix or .avi, or any other I'm not aware of.

Thanks

Why do you care about "most" DVD players? Shouldn't you concentrate on the specific player your friend has and what formats it can play?

Just buy the guy a freakin' $50 DVD player from Wal-Mart or something. You can't force an old DVD player to play burned discs. Good Luck®

I know, I know....

The point the guys does not know. A kind of personal gift, he fixed my boat (a laser, he is got the time, he is retired). It is a set of all the Volvo Ocean Race footage videos, a kind of exclusive set of DVDs that the Volvo organization gave to all participants. We are sailing nerds, around here (Amsterdam). Anyhow, I ripped the DVDs these past Christmas at my brothers, and I thought it could be a nice way to say thanks. I know he is got a computer, so no problem, I'll include a link to Apple's Quicktime. Working on the DVD covers right now.

Looking good.

i bought several cheapo DVD players for camping, kitchen, garage, etc. they all support DIVX, and are even branded on the front with the DIVX logo. i would go with that format for compression.

the cheapo brand is well known too; not a store brand: Philips.
