This isn't for school or anything, i'm trying to calculate how much money I owe.

If $206.81 has $15.92 in tax, then how much tax would $168.84 have?

Thanks.

That's a 7.7% tax. So $13.00.

Just find out how much $15.92 out of $206.81 equals by division. The answer is the percentage. Divide $15.92 by $206.81. This should help you out in the future. What math are you in?

Someone is assuming a constant tax rate of 7.7%. The first $100 could be tax free with 15.92 on the next 106.81. Then the answer would be 15.92/106.81 * 68.84 = $10.26.

Bertrand Russell would accuse anyone who claimed to actually know the "right" answer of being a teacher.

From the way the question is worded, we also don't know whether the $206.81 is inclusive or exclusive of the $15.92 tax.

It's exclusive. 206.81 + 15.92 = Total.

So you're trying to find out how much is 15.92 out of 206.81.

The simple way to learn and remember this is:

"Out of" means the same thing as "divided by". You can substitute the terms mathematically.
Vis: "7 out of ten prefer our product" is exactly the same thing as 7/10.

"Per" is just one more way of saying "divided by". So "per cent" ("per hundred") just means "divided by 100".

So 0.7 equals 70 per cent (per cent - "per hundred")

So: 15.92 out of 206.81 ( = 15.92 / 206.81 ) equals 0.07698, which is 7.698 hundredths, so 7.7 per cent.

168.84 * 0.077 (or 7.7 percent) = 13.00

It depends, is there an alternative minimum tax that applies?

basically it's this equation:
15.92/206.81 = x/168.4

The easiest way to do this sort of question is to think of the units as "katanas" and "headless torsos." So the 15.92 katanas are slicing and dicing 206.81 headless torsos, and the problem just sort of solves itself.

Priceless! I guess you owe nothing if the person you "owe" is the headless torso.
