Im sure there are many here who appreciate orchestral music, so i thought id recommend this guy.

I just got a hold of 'The Plantes' and it really does sound great (in particular Jupiter). If you are into Aaron Copland, John Williams and orchestrated movie soundtracks, try it out you might like it.

Cheers

John Williams "stole" most of his best stuff from Holst.

One of my favorite composers though, been performing his stuff for years. It never gets old in the programing.

Venus is amazing

Yah I guess there really isnt a topic to stay on so I suggest Bartok. Pretty much anything. I've always been a big Gustav Mahler fan also. It's just so hard to make real money in classical music that I got out of the scene...... mostly.

Mars: Bringer of War is a great piece.

Also used during the start up of the Escape Velocity series (at least Nova).

Also, stop picking foreign sounding names

Wow what a coincidence I just downloaded from itunes London Symphony Orchestra's Holst: The planets. I hadn't even seen your thread, I was cleaning up my itunes and thought it was time for some more classical music. I've never gone wrong when I select music from the LSO.

I'm not familiar with his second; I only know his First Suite (in E-Flat, of course). The only thing more enjoyable than listening to Holst is playing it as lead trumpet (not cornet, trumpet) in a small wind symphony. Very powerful music, even (especially?) when played in a very small band (think one on a part).

I miss my trumpet...

I've heard "The Planets" performed by a number of orchestras. I particularly like the Tomita version; it incorporates the majesty of Holst's music with some rather interesting synth work.

But I still can't beat "Pictures at an Exhibition" for grandeur and majesty...

The TOMITA version? EWWWWWWWWWWWW. I laughed when someone told me in college that they thought the Tomita version was the best version of Mars that there was.

Thumbs WAY down on Tomita.

I don't know... When you see that Stravinski's Sacre du printemps was released some 6 years before, the Planets sound kinda ... bland and conventional. Not a big fan here.
