Hypothetically, say you would name your baby Moxie/Moxy. What would your preferred spelling be?

I had a dog named Moxie... The WORST thing you can do to your child is give it a weird name. You may think it's cool but they will spend the rest of their lives having to answer stupid questions about the origin of their name.

Indeed.
Lots and lots of names are nouns, and almost all have meaning and etymology behind them. Now that's settled, on with the spelling debate.

Marge: Homer, I've been thinking, if the baby's a boy, what do you think of the name Larry?
Homer: Marge, we can't do that! All the kids will call him 'Larry Fairy'.
Marge: Well, how about Louie?
Homer: They'll call him 'Screwy Louie'.
Marge: Bob?
Homer: 'Flob'.
Marge: Luke?
Homer: 'Puke'.
Marge: Marcus?
Homer: 'Mucus'.
Marge: What about Bart?
Homer: Let's see... Bart, Cart, Dart, Ee-art... Nope, can't see any problem with that!

I think a name like Moxie is best off being a middle name. If the kid likes the name, he will use his middle name with friends and relatives, and his first official name for business cars, resumés etc. If he doesn't like his middle name, he can just ignore it.

My name is spelled weird. If nothing else it helps get conversation rolling when I meet new people.

My first name is traditionally given to girls (in the US), so I went through a bit of frustration in elementary and Jr. High. I would avoid giving your kid a non-"normal" name.
It's very popular around here for people to give their kids strange spellings to "normal" names. I have friends who have a 2 month old named "Mathieu".
Then again, my first name happens to be passed down to me (the 3rd gen) and I'll probably give it to my son.

Far too many "alternative spellings" just look like "I can't spell" to me. What's wrong with TRADITIONAL spellings, anyway? Or better yet, how about traditional NAMES? I have problems thinking that anyone could become a CEO with a name like "Ralphie" or "Tifanni".

… so far.
I share this woman's opinion of it:
Do you know what - I like Moxie CrimeFighter! I usually detest 'invented' names like this, and I would never choose it for a child of my own, but there's something about it that makes me smile, and not in a mocking way!
'Moxie' is cute, a vintage way of saying 'sparky', yet still sounds like a girls' name, like Roxy (which thanks to 'Chicago' also has that 20s vintage showbiz feel).
And CrimeFighter... well, when there are parents out there calling their daughters 'Hunter', it's really refreshing to see an occupational name with a positive, strong meaning! Very unusual, perhaps a little crazy, but principled and strong, with a very clear meaning and set of values. Not an easy name to wear day to day, but it is the middle name so it doesn't have to be.
Parents of Moxie CrimeFighter - I never thought I would, but I salute you!

I know a guy that gave his son the middle name of Danger. That way the boy could say "my middle name is Danger'. And to think... my cousin almost married this guy... thank goodness she dumped him.

I like Moxy with a Y.
Then again I plan on giving all my kids names that start with Zs. That way their initials will be ZZ.
Oh the fun my are one day going to have. Or I should say, the fun I`ll have at their expense.

Given the two, I'd go with Moxy, that way she can sign her name with that super-huge-curvy 'y' at the end.

I know how you feel: my dad’s name is Kelly.
Or rather, Kelly is his middle name, but since his first name is Pier (which is pronounced like piger in Danish, piger meaning ‘girls’), he’s always been known as Kelly.

Neither. Name your child something that won't stigmatize her. Name her something family-related or historical, whatever, but not a "vanity name" because you thought it was kule. It isn't like picking a color for your cellphone -- they'll have to live with it the rest of their lives.

Moxie is better. It does have a meaning (spark, gumption, etc) and that is how people will want to spell it. I think it's a great name for a little girl!

Normally I would vote for a Y over an I. (I am a Bryan, not a Brian). But in this case I think Moxie is better. Looks cuter, is longer, and seels more solid.
And don't listen to the people who say it will get them made fun of. All names can be made fun of if people want to (I have been called Bree-ann, and Brain before). And Moxie is really low on the scale of "mockable names."

"A Boy Named Sue"
My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me "Sue."
Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."
Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean,
My fist got hard and my wits got keen,
I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame.
But I made a vow to the moon and stars
That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars
And kill that man who gave me that awful name.
Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew.
At an old saloon on a street of mud,
There at a table, dealing stud,
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me "Sue."
Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had,
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye.
He was big and bent and gray and old,
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said: "My name is 'Sue!' How do you do!
Now your gonna die!!"
Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down, but to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer.
I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile.
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile.
And he said: "Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn't be there to help ya along.
So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's the name that helped to make you strong."
He said: "Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do.
But ya ought to thank me, before I die,
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you "Sue.'"
I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
And I called him my pa, and he called me his son,
And I came away with a different point of view.
And I think about him, now and then,
Every time I try and every time I win,
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but Sue! I still hate that name!
