Granny finds grenade in groceries | Oddly Enough | Reuters

I read this and thought: "If the grenade was from WW2, how could it still be active?"

Can anyone shed some light on that?

I assume by active it means its still able to blow up in one way or another. The article said the pin was missing, so I'm assuming the mechanism for detonating it failed, after it had been thrown by a soldier or something of the sort. The gun powder and shrapnel are still inside, and like the article said, if she would've tried to cook it, BOOM!

I take it that gunpowder doesn't break down over time?

According to Wikipedia, Gunpowder has a very slow decomposition rate, however, I'm not familiar with grenades that use gunpowder. The classic "Pineapple" grenade uses TNT for instance.

Oh, maybe it is TNT. I was just assuming it was some explosive powder or something.
