I have an interesting situation. I need to move my HDTV about 180 miles in one go, along with other stuff in the near future. I have the original box for it. The catch is that when I bought the tv, I did not get the styrofoam that goes in back of the tv, only the styofoam that goes on the front, the styrofoam that the panel itself rests on. This wasn't a big problem for bringing the tv home by itself. But I'm going to be moving all my stuff along with the tv. Missing half the styrofoam means that I can't put the box on it's side, and I can't stack stuff on top of the box. One option is I could just put the tv box flat on top of all my stuff, but I'd rather just pack some other material in in place of the styrofoam.

Has anyone else had to move an HDTV with portions of the original packing missing, or even without the original box? If I wasn't moving all my stuff with the tv, it wouldn't be a problem...

Oh, it's a 40 inch, so for purposes of packing all my stuff in a minivan, it's not a small tv.

If you are also moving clothes, I would stuff them around the back of the set.

Stick your pillows in there. Or blankets or other linens.

If you're moving any kind of couch at the same time or anything, I'd put a sheet to prevent scratches over the screen and stick the TV securely on there. I had to haul an HDTV around town for several days when the box wouldn't fit in my car. I just stuck it in my back seat and it came out in perfect condition.

I was thinking about doing something like that. I was just worried about stuff on top of the tv putting pressure on the back and causing problems. I suppose I should probably think about how to arrange my stuff. Heavier stuff under the tv. Clothes on top.

I don't think I'd lay the TV flat during the move. They aren't shipped that way or stored that way.

Right. I'm just worried about the tv shifting in the box without the form fitting styrofoam and getting damaged.

Jam in enough cushions, clothes, and blankets, and I'll don't think you'll have much of a problem.
