Broncos trade Plummer to Buccaneers; will he retire?
By Frank Schwab
The Gazette
(MCT)
The Denver Broncos won't have to worry about Jake Plummer's apparent retirement becoming a distraction. The quarterback's tenure with the team ended Saturday when he was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A proposed deal was nixed Friday when Plummer indicated he would retire.
The Broncos will receive a conditional 2008 draft pick for Plummer, the team announced.
The Buccaneers now have the rights to Plummer, who is under contract through 2009. They also announced the signing of free agent quarterback Jeff Garcia.
The Broncos also acquired defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson, who was the first pick of the 1994 draft, in a trade with the Miami Dolphins for a sixth-round draft pick. Denver signed former New Orleans guard Montrae Holland to a one-year, $1 million deal, said a source who requested anonymity because the Broncos don't announce contract details. Holland was with the Saints for four seasons and started 23 games.
The Broncos and Buccaneers agreed to a trade Friday, but it was called off when Plummer decided to retire, a decision he had been considering since the season ended, his brother Eric said.
Eric insisted Friday that the trade had nothing to do with Jake's decision, although it might have brought his feelings on retirement "to a head."

I wonder what would have happened if Plummer had been on a Bill Walsh team. Not JUST because Walsh built winning teams but because he was good for QB's. Not everyone can be a Montana or Young but you know which team led the NFC in offensive yardage in 1979, the year before Montana became first string?
The SF 49ers with Steve DeBerg at QB.
Here are the all time passer ratings.

DeBerg wasn't that bad but Plummer is rated higher even after spending all those years in Arizona. UGH!
Too late now though, I think.

Mike Shanahan has been a busy man the last couple of days.
First the Plummer trade (Plummer retired anyway) and the signing of Big Daddy, then trading George (the big disappointment) Foster and Tatum Bell to Detroit for Dre Bly.
Should be an interesting offseason for those of us who are Broncos fans.

Plummer still would have been a quarterback with a strong arm and bad instincts. That's the way he was at ASU, that's the way he was at the Cards, and that's how he was with the Broncos. He's certainly not the worst quarterback in the NFL, but he's not someone that makes you swoon if your team gets him.
