From CNN.com, America's 2007 Most Admired Companies. Voted on by "businesspeople", whatever that means.

1 General Electric
2 Starbucks
3 Toyota Motor
4 Berkshire Hathaway
5 Southwest Airlines
6 FedEx
7 Apple
8 Google
9 Johnson & Johnson
10 Procter & Gamble

Apple is #7, which is good. But GE #1? I wouldn't have guessed that one. And what does Berkshire Hathaway do?

Starbucks is actually a great company to work for. They treat their employees quite well.

I also noticed that Apple is #1 in the Innovation section, ahead of Google:

Rob you. They are into insurance.

I think they might want to ask all of the women in Cincinnati who have developed breast cancer what they think of Procter and Gamble.

Philanthropy? He invests in profitable ventures and makes a ton for those who hold the stock. His philanthropic activities are separate.

General Electric? I'm having a hard time getting over that.

I've never just heard someone say, "Gee, you know...that General Electric sure is swell!"

GE always does a lot of "institutional advertising" touting how "good" the company is and how its solutions help us live better lives. That's probably why it gets such high marks.

GE gets high marks from me. They fed & clothed me and put me through school.

Dad retired from there. He worked at a plant that makes locomotives. When I was a kid, I always wanted him to transfer to one that made "cool stuff," like TVs or boomboxes.

I think this is like the third or fourth year in a row GE has topped this list.

Are you talking about the urban myth that deodorant causes cancer?

Jeff sent out a nice email to the whole company thanking us for earning #1 two years in a row.

The only ranking that really surprises me is Microsoft at #12... I expected them to rank much lower.

No. I am talking about the P&G manufacturing plants in Cincinnati and the documented amounts of higher ratios of women with breast cancer.

My wife's family is from Cincinnati. They have lost a few members of their family to breast cancer.

Aside from the last two, who compete with each other, none of the companies in the top 10 have a competitor in the top 10.

Indeed.

Back when I used to work at Kinko's, I wound up having a conversation with a woman who worked as a regional/city/whatever manager for Starbucks here in town. She laid out a lot of the benefits that employees and managers in Starbucks enjoy and I was really amazed.

You hear so much about employee benefit and performance incentives in retail, designed to hook new hire employees and turn them into career employees and managers. And frankly, they're usually bullshit.

But from what she told me, Starbucks is doing a better job of making employees think long term than most others companies are.

I'm surprised I remember any of the conversation, actually. Because the woman I had the conversation with was phenominally hot.
