Why do the number keypads on calculators and computer keyboards start with 1 at the bottom left, through to 9 at the top right, with 0 at the very bottom, while ATM machines, TV remotes etc start with 1 at the top left through to 9 at the bottom right, with 0 at the very bottom?

Geez, what is it with some people. Isn't this what forums are for - asking questions and discussion? Why have them at all if after every question, some smartass chimes in with the "search Google" stock reply. Give the guy a break. However, you did at least provide an informative link, so kudos to you.

Now you can shut down the forums, ok?
For f**k sake, I asked a question, I didn't know the reason and I thought it would be an interesting discussion. Y'know, this is a discussion forum, people!!! (shock horror!!)

Yeah, you guys are right... and you both did a great job contributing to the discussion in this thread!
To the OP, after reading my post, it does sound like I was being a dick, but in all honesty I just took your question, typed it in google, and made a link to the first response. I thought I was just joking around (hence the and ), sorry if I came off as rude...guess you can't really judge tone through text.

It's because they want to maximize the amount of the mistake you could make if you accidentally type by memory so you use the bank more often. For example, if you went to withdraw $123 and you were used to using a calculator, you would instead take out $789.
This solution works except for the fact it needs to be a multiple of $20 for most ATM's.

Calculator pads are based on adding machine pads. ATM and other pads are based on phone number pads. Simple enough? The real question here is why AT&T designed its number pad the way they did, with a huge amount of history behind a 10-key adding machine paradigm.

The article Nodnarb linked to provided a good explanation: because AT&T did UI studies to determine how phones should be laid out.

No. Forums are for arguing with hippies.
Interesting question. After much thought (about 3 seconds), I think I prefer the 1-2-3 at the bottom, computer/calculator style.

Of all the explanations, the "ABC at the top" seems to be the most logical. And while typewriter key arrangements were indeed intended to slow people down, there's no reason to slow a touch-tone dialer down; you either get an intercept "you call did not go through" message if there's a problem, and you hang up and start over. But keeping the alphabet in order on the keys DOES make sense. And with the studies showing that the compact and relatively symmetrical (and now familiar) layout was preferable, it seems that the "real" answer is at hand.
