This may sound silly, but my water heater stopped working. Is it possible that there's a microprocessor in it that is subject to the DST bug?

I dunno, I think your reaching on that.

Even if your water heater did have a chip which maintained the date and time, the effects would have been that the time was an hour off, not that water heater would stop working.

I think it's just a coincidence that's all.

mac128k-1984 is right. Your water heater has no contact with other things (Its not on a network or something). So as far as it knows, the way it figures out time will always be right.

Also, I bet your water heater don't even know what time it is. Like mac128k-1984 said.

I'll go one more, I'll bet your water heater doesn't even know what day it is!

It doesn't care what time it is...unless it is on "off peak metering" to help save money. This would require a timer, but probably nothing so complicated that DST would affect it.

Is it gas or electric? If gas, does it have a pilot light or electronic ignition? Have you checked the following:

Gas supply valve open
Water supply valve open
Breaker closed
Pilot lit

If electric, you may have burned out element(s). If you are not "handy", call a plumber

I highly doubt DST is having anything to do with it.

I'll go even better, I'll bet your water heater doesn't even know it's a water heater.

(That's actually a bit sad. Poor water heater.)

Centerchannel68 is closer to the truth than any DST issue here. Water heaters are more mundanely operated than even many air conditioning thermostats, and they only react to the temperature of the water in the tank. If it gets too cold, the heater (gas or electric) comes on until the water is at some higher temperature, then the heater turns off. That's it.

Check out what macforray says if it's a gas water heater. If it's electric, make sure its circuit breaker is closed (on) and that nothing's disturbed the thermostat setting on the water heater itself.

If you have to replace it, check out a point of use type that only heats water when needed.

I consider that a good thing. Who's want to argue with a sentient water heater?
