Legislators: Cockfighting No Longer a Way of Life in New Mexico

Its been passed down from generation to generation. Even the nation's founding fathers contributed to the sport. The sport that has been banned in 48 states, soon to be 49. Cockfighting, for years its only been legal in two states, New Mexico and Louisiana. Now law makers in the Land of Enchantment are saying cockfighting is no longer a way of life in New Mexico.

Representative Mary Jane Garcia, D-Dona Ana, has been asking law makers to side with her for years. Garcia says the sport is nothing more than cruelty to animals. She has also made claims that the sport contributes to illegal activities, such as drugs, underage drinking and gambling. While many agree with Representative Garcia, others say she has no proof to her claims.

Hundreds of cock fighters and breeders flooded Santa Fe in hopes to get through to law makers, but in the end the bill passed with a 49-20 vote. Those fighting for a chance to keep what they say is a tradition, say Governor Richardson is only moving toward the ban because he's placed a bid for presidency.

There's no more cock fighting in New Mexico so Louisiana will be the last place to watch it.

The headline should have read: Cock Fighting to be Illegal in New Mexico.

There's a huge difference in something being illegal and no longer practiced. Anyone who thinks that cock fighting is going to disappear just because it's illegal is delusional.

Hopefully Ann Coulter will say something brilliant to persuade those liberal law makers that cock fighting is an American right which needs to be preserved, and will come out and endorses a little cock action.
