I'm changing my email address and all I have to say is what a pain in the neck.
Not only do I need to spam friends/family/acquaintances/co-workers but I need to create a new apple id for the discussions, and itunes. I could not change the apple id for itunes but rather I needed send out an email requesting that they make the change (My confidence level is low on this, I just know they're going to screw it up).
then there's all of the places I've registered it at, credit card companies, banks, mortgages, etc. I know I'm going to miss one.
I've kept my .mac account going, in part because I knew this was going to be a hassle but also I was waiting to get a new job (my resume had the .mac address) before landing my job I didn't want to close the account and then have new prospective employer have no way to email me
Now that I have the domain/email addresses that I want, its time to give .mac the heave ho - well it will be once I finish spamming everyone.

Yeah, I hope you have a Domain For Life now -- firstname@lastname.whatever, or the closest feasible approximation thereof, is the way to go if you ask me.
And once you have the domain, you can have a catchall on a subdomain. Every website I register for, I give them a variation on
macnn.com@bulk.mylastname.net
which keeps things nice and tidy.
Are you going to have an email-address-warming party?

I change roughly every 3 years. It weeds out who is and is not my friend.

I hung on to the @alumni.school.edu for a long while, but eventually it starts looking kinda pathetic, like some old geezer with a beer gut hanging out at homecoming, reliving the good old days.

I've always had the same email address with gmail. If you use a web based service then you never have to change which is very nice.

Eh? You can change the e-mail address associated with an Apple ID at http://myinfo.apple.com/ (and also change your Apple ID to be your new e-mail address)

Not if your email and apple id are one and the same. While yes you can change the the email address, but my apple id is my email address and there's no way to change that..

This is basically the first time for me. I've had a dot mac account since iTools, and in some ways its kind of sad to get rid of the email address. between the spam I'm getting and the cost, it makes little sense to continue. I've also had people who tried to email me get the email bounced back even when dot mac was up and running. This was particularly galling when I was trying to get a job and the head hunter was unable to send me info on a job prospect, others have told me they had the same problem.

Im in exactly the same boat. i didnt want the hassle of changing the address and i was also sending my resume out all over the place. now that i have a new Job, i think its time i abandoned .Mac for good. it just isnt justified to spend that much, and the only reason ive kept i this long is for the email mostly...it's like they got ur balls in a vice grip.
Funny thing is, ive had the same free, reliable service from Microsoft for 12 years now, and it offers me double the storage !!!!! i cant beleive i feel for the iTools->.mac switch, i should have given i up back then to begin with.
PS>> i have a different appleID (developer) and a .Mac, which doesnt make thigs easier with the number of passwords and accounts i have.

That's the main reason why I keep my .Mac membership. Meanwhile, I do use GMail and my web domain email addresses.

i have everyone send me e-mails to my school email (as well as sign all documents that ask for e-mail with it) and that has a built in forwarding option that i have set up to foward to my gmail account. very nice thing is that my school account has a spam filter and so does gmail. only 3-5 spam e-mails slip through every week.

I wish apple had a stronger filter. I get several spam e-mails daily. At least they're of the nature for stocks and such, no "adult" content seems to arrive and that's a good thing.
Anyways I got more infor back from the itunes store and it seems I can keep my id, even though it is membername@mac.com. Seems kind of weird, once I cancel the account, I'll still use the @mac.com's email address as my id.
Thank's to Angus_D's link I changed the email address of my .mac account, though I had hoped to create a new id, but that doesn't seem feasible.

Oh, apparently .Mac members can't change their Apple ID. Perhaps they can when their .Mac account expires? Probably not, though, due to the whole "you get to keep your iChat name forever!" thing. Lame.

Incidentally, I learned yesterday that if you still have an .edu email address of one kind or another, you can get NY Times Select for free.

Wow, you must be pretty new to the internet scene if that is the case
I have had the same email account for the past 11 years, but I just recently got a myname@mylastname.com email address that I am going to be switching over to. I'm hoping that I don't miss anything important while making the switch.

I had a dither when .Mac went paid (I used to use a .mac email, from when it started, I even had to use the Apple HQ street address to register as it was the only US address I had to hand). What I should have done is buy a domain and just used forwarders on it. But I was a lazy idiot and used my (cable) ISP supplied one. This is now a real 'chain' and one of the main things stopping me even thinking of switching ISP's, doubly so as my mum also uses one of the ISP addresses. It would be a pain but I could manage changing over, but it's something I wouldn't want to put her through.
I have now bought the domain, and don't set up anything 'New' with the ISP one. but there would be a hell of a lot of stuff the change.

Nope. Not even when the .mac account expires.
