Love that sound.
Reminds a me a little of The Gumball Rally (from the 70's) - they raced a Ferrari Daytona through Times Square, up Park Ave. Drooooool.

Yeah, that really long Audi one with Will Smith and some robots must have cost a fair bit.

Shutting down all those roads in those serious cities is a huge dollar figure. Not to mention the support necessary to keep these cars performing proper for all the filming. Think Ferrari pit crews and support personnel.

They had to SHUT DOWN public streets to shoot all of that. In MAJOR cities. For quite a while.
Think about that.

Pretty nice.
Many of you guys been to an F1 race? Something you don't hear on TV is that they actually burp and fart most of the time on the over run. Kind of ruins the effect but it is still pretty nice.
I was glad that I went with a mate who had been to a number of races. He recommended that I took some ear plugs. Glad I did. I have a strong stomach but being subjected to that sort of noise and sound pressure levels for longer than a few minutes from 5-10 metres from the track has a habit of making one a bit ill.
The older engines certainly had a bit more character.
If you want to hear character though, you need to hear some of the testing engines they make. A good family friend of my wife's, who I am now good mates with, was the electrical director for Cosworth Racing in Northhampton. He was responsible for designing the engine management systems for the Jaguar and Minardi F1 cars that were using Cosworth engines (this was back in 2003). He took me on a full factory tour a couple of weekends before the Hockenheim Grand Prix that year. Got to see Mark Webber's engine being made. However, the best thing was the testing stations.
They had three test chambers. Two were smaller chambers that were used for single cylinder engines hooked up directly to a dyno. All preliminary testing was done with a single cylinder for obvious reasons (1 cylinders worth of valves, cylinder head etc versus 10 for the V10). These things sounded hilarious! Plus the single cylinder of roughly 300cc engine was producing between 80 and 100 hp!
The big test chamber could take a full engine, gearbox and transmission. They had three dynos in it that were super intelligent. Two of the dynos could "pretend" to be wheels so that they could simulate driving particular tracks, using all the gears, braking and elevation changes. The whole thing was sitting on an enormous, air-suspended seismic platform that weighed something like 300 tonnes. Open the door to the chamber whilst it was running and it was deafening.
Amazing experience.

Great sounds of some old cars, but otherwise disappointing. Goof: the car arrives the gas station on slicks (right front wheel) but when it stops they're suddenly rain tires/intermediates...

you got to see test chambers?!! nice!
i watched my first GP this year (Melbourne), i've followed F1 for a long time but i'd never been to a live race til this yr.
it was AMAZING, they have an incredibly raw sound and you get to see just how much precision the drivers have. i bought a PVR just so i can archive all the races, i couldn't believe how great it was

Think about that.
I shoot commercials, so I know what stuff costs. Shutting down roads is relatively cheap, especially on the weekend, especially for a couple of hours in the early morning. CGI is expensive. Ferrari will have supplied the cars for free - this is a huge promotion for them. We work with partnerships all the time.
The Guinness ad 'horses' cost in excess of £5.000.000 ($11.000.000), easily double the amount of the Ferrari ad. I don't mean this to turn into a pissing contest, I loved the Ferrari filmography and especially the sound design, but it just wasn't all that expensive. Journos calling it the most expensive TV ad of all times either don't know what they're talking about or have fallen for the party line.
The most expensive commercial for TV was shot in 2004, for Chanel with Nicole Kidman. It costs in excess of $36 million, with Kidman alone charging $4+ million.
The Honda Accord commercial (remember, the car parts chain reaction) cost over $6.000.000 to make.

But yeah, the sound design is what I found especially tasty. The visuals were okay, but the sound designers really did their **** on that one. Except for the third or fourth car, it sounds a little bit blown out, like it's clipping or something.

Why would this ad be expensive? Shutting down city locations for filming I guess.
Too long and boring. But then again I don't ejaculate over "engine sounds".

Strangely enough, it's also the lamest ad ever made.

Some PR drone: "And this is the most expensive made for TV ad ever made." <--untrue
Journalists too lazy to research: "Ohhhhhhhh." Scribble.
Rob, who's never shot a commercial, worked in commercials, or taken part in a commercial: "Hay guyz, look at this ad, most expensive made for TV ad ever made. LOL, Coollerblades."
Somebody who knows what he is talking about : " Cool commercial, but no, it's not. Here's why and here are examples of other stuff that was way more expensive."
Rob, who can't ever admit to being wrong: "What do you know, suxor?"
Yeah, right.

good to see the oil companies are spending their record profits on something useful, like freakishly expensive commercials. Makes me smile to drop $50 in my car.
