Just thought I'd share this: I was driving about 2 blocks away from my apartment, and it was a regular intersection in the neighborhood. I had no stop sign. The other street had one. I was traveling at 30mph. I'm approaching the intersection when I see a ford bronco SUV, primer black, flying down the intersecting road, going about 40mph. He had no intentions of stopping at the stop sign, which explains his velocity. He sees me, and locks up his brakes, and his SUV starts to rotate a little. I just floor it and brace for impact..... but nothing happened. He must have missed my rear bumper by a few inches. If I had gone for the brake pedal, instead of the gas pedal, I'd either be in hte hospital or a casket right now. Pretty scary how life can be over just like that.

My mom has had a similar expierience except for she got hit and had to go to the hospital for months. Facial reconstruction, broken jaw, twisted back (looks like a river). She was in an Accord... and it was a semi not stopping.
Edit: Forgot to mention... she has to go to the chiropractor twice a week for the rest of her life for this.

Interesting . . .
Did you notice any evidence of turn-signal usage?

When I saw the title of the thread, all I could think was "well you've spent enough time provoking them, of them finally snapped."

Okay...this deserves to be said..
An SUV did not kill almost you. The driver almost killed you.
Why couldn't your thread be titled "I was almost killed yesterday?" Because it involved an SUV? It must've been the fault of the rabid, out of control SUV...

The fellow just happened to be driving an SUV. The poor and idiotic driving skills of the pilot of the other car almost killed you.
I wonder when we will have cars with parachute ejection systems.

No.... because if it was a car, I probably would not have been killed. This was a 1980s Bronco, and it's bumper was about as high as my driver's side window. I would have probably been killed. If it was another car, like a neon/camry/accord/sebring, I probably would have just been injured.

I have a dream of a world where a thread is judged not by its title, but by its contents.

While this is true, the SUV indicates the mental capacity of the driver involved. SUV owners are too stupid to realize they only need a mini-van.

Technically the SUV would have killed him. The vehicle was delivering the force and energy not the driver.

The driver was guiding that force and energy, but the pop tarts the driver had for breakfast gave the driver the energy to steer the SUV, but the people at the pop tart factory made the pop tarts so that the driver could eat them, but blah blah blah.

But you weren't killed, or even hit. And your sensationlism and attempt to project what could have happened arise simply because you need yet one more excuse to rant about SUVs. Your silly statement that, had you been hit by a car, you "probably" would have just been injured has no basis in fact; people are killed every day by collisions with cars of all sizes and conjecture about what might have happened serves no purpose, other than to keep trying to convince yourself that you're right about SUVs.

My friend and I were going home in his loaner Miata. I was driving and we were going through downtown Tampa at around 1 in the morning. Lots of city blocks with light after light after light. Our light was green and about 1/3rd of the way through the intersection we look to my left and there is some guy flying into the intersection in an Infiniti QX. I was literally staring at the bottom of his grill, level with my face.
I dropped a gear (manual) and floored it through that intersection. The guy missed the back of us by millimeters and then had the balls to stop and start swearing at us. He's sitting in the intersection screaming at us and his light is red.
I don't think we would've made it if he hit us. Ok no. There is no chance I would've made it and I highly doubt my friend would've looked too good afterwards.

Just curious what kind of car do you drive?

I lol'd.
Cash, glad to hear your reflexes saved you. With all the terrible drivers out there I can't help but drive with my guard way up. I was just talking to a EMT driver the other day about all this. People are incredibly blithe about the dangers of driving, most of which they bring to the road themselves.

Here's a scary story: My brother was at a stop light and the light turned green, but he forgot he was in second gear and accidently stalled his truck. Just at that second, some lady in her SUV clips his frongt bumper and tears it completely off as she runs a red light. If his truck hadn't stalled at that very second, the lady woulda T-boned him and probably killed him.

Well, sticking with the cars<SUVs argument I'd say getting shot with a 9mm isn't as bad as getting shot with a 50 cal sniper rifle round.
Inattentive drivers are the real cause here, but there is no doubt an inattentive driver behind the wheel of a heavier and taller vehicle is more deadly that the converse.
Semis account for a little more than 2% of all the vehicle on the road yet are involved in 13% of all traffic fatalities.

Well, even most pro-gun folk wouldn't allow you to walk around an airport carrying an assault rifle.

And? The assault rifle would just randomly start firing on its own? Just like SUVs randomly cause crashes on their own?

Neither of these is true, but nonetheless our (entirely Republican for over half a decade) government has decided that it's too dangerous to allow people with assault rifles into airports.
Would you be OK with your child's classmates carrying machine guns in schools, since there's no danger from the gun itself? It's absurd to say that people should be allowed to do whatever they want with something just because that thing isn't dangerous all by itself.

When did the law change that sets age limits for gun ownership? Now "children" can own them? Since I missed that law being passed, I'll agree -- an underage "child" should not be allowed to carry an assault rifle to school.
In the mean time, I will hold irresponsible adults accountable for their actions, not the means by which said action took place.

Why? The gun isn't just going to shoot people by itself! Obviously a risk-versus-reward assessment isn't the way to judge this situation. We just have to point out that a gun can't kill anyone by itself and we can dismiss any argument against a gun being carried in any situation, right? Because that's pretty much what your argument amounts to in this thread.

It looks to me like the SUV was in control and that the OP overestimated the probability of a catastrophic collision because of his inherent disdain for such vehicles. JMHO.
