Different. Catchy.
I spent Saturday at the West Coast(Australia) Blues & Roots Festival, and i had a blast. If anything it was an excuse to goto a festival and see a few bands perform. I got way more than what i paid for, great karma.
The shocker of the event was "Xavier Rudd", an Ozzie musician/surfer. We had no idea who he was, and we wernt too interested and decided to use the time to chill and have a bite....when we got back to the stage, the vibe was just amazing.
One-man-band..... guitar, precussions, harmonica....and get this....didgeridoos. Ive been in Australia for 3 years now, and apart from the occasional guy blowing this instrument around town trying to create "sound" (as opposed to music), i never heard it played as a musical instrument at least not the way this dude plays it....off the hook !
To me, it was apparent that his influences are folk and roots(obviously)...and a definate connection with Paul Simon. I dont think everyone will appreciate this music..... but if your into folk, have a listen. good n simple lyrics, great talent with so many instruments, and definately entertaining....the vibe was indescribable. If you'd like to listen to his stuff...check out "Journey Song", "Gift Of The Trees" and "Let Me be".
The main reason i went to the show was cause the "John Butler Trio" was performing, and they were the highlight of the event.......definately better upclose and personal. The other great band of the day was "The Cat Empire"....if your into jazzy/latino/rock/rap check them out...they remined me of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones....only more on the "Salsa"-side (yes i love saying salsa

).
Anyway, enjoy !!
