"He says the amateur mistake that they made is not having a removable battery," Dvorak said. "You run 20 minutes and you're using up half the battery power. You get 40 minutes total talk time. And the interface fouls up constantly."

Given the overheating, random shutting down, and burning power cord problems, grease buildup and other problems when the new Macbooks launched, this rumor could portend similar product defects when the iPhone releases in 2 months. Interested buyers should probably wait a few months after launch for Apple to work out all the bugs.

Apparently he got this information from a Cingular source. Thanks, but no thanks. I think I'll wait until the device is actually released, or when people get their hands on final products, and people can tell me just how long the battery lasts then.

Add the fact that this is coming out his _his_ mouth.

I'll believe it when I see it. 40 min talk time = obvious flop.

Apple would push back the release before doing something so stupid.

Of all of the iPhone rumors, forty minutes of talk time is the most ridiculous.

Nah, non-removable batteries can't last longer than 40 minutes. I heard it from Dvorak; it must be true.

I'd be shocked if it was only 40 minutes of talk time.

However, I could believe it if it was 40-60 minutes split between navigating around the screen, while playing music at the same time.

That would suck too.

In fact, my Sony Ericsson doesn't last more than maybe 1.5 hours of watching video IIRC. Fortunately, it has interchangeable batteries.

Rumor has it that his inside source is a Cingular janitor's third cousin, thrice removed.

They were talking about this on TWiT this week and Dvorak admitted that that was from a beta unit. Patrick Norton was pretty sure that the final specs will be much greater regarding battery life.

And they addressed how Dvorak baits Mac users for his blog at dvorak.org/blog Drink up, for you kids playing along

Read the comments on that site for a laugh. Lots of PC weenies trying to say the iPhone doesn't have wi-fi.

Of course it's a beta unit. However, even for a beta unit, that would royally suck.

I don't buy this 40 minute claim either, but nonetheless there are several of us who believe the non-removable battery of the iPhone could prove to be a significant limitation for some people.

I don't buy this claim because I know someone at Cingular and no one outside mahogany row has been allowed to see the iPhone, and his group gets all the pre-release phones to test/beat on.

This could be Apple's golden opportunity to sue Dvorak for slander. I say hit him where it hurts, in his personal finances.

Anyone who listens to Devorak on TWiT knows that he has a tendency to exaggerate about lots of things. He doesn't always do that to bait Mac users. I haven't listened to this week's episode, but he's done it plenty of times in the past.

Gee. A prototype with limited battery life. Big effing whoop!

We have a prototype module in development that is supposed to have about 600uA of parasitic current draw according to our worst case analysis. The first prototypes had 2000uA of current draw while asleep. After 5 months of software changes and HW tweaks, it's down to 800uA, but there is still work to do.

In the next month, they will reach the target of 600uA, not because of a breakthrough, but because the math is already done and they just have to figure out where the current is going (software is a pain).

In the meantime, the module's still work and that's what we send to our customer.

So this is typical. More refinement is being done and the iPhone will perform as expected of any cell phone (or better, since it IS Apple).

I'm a bird. I am the 1% (of pets).

The question is when that prototype is from. The iPhone launches in 2 months.

Once they remove the debug code, the battery will last well over 50 minutes.

Pretty close back in 2003: He was off on the time frame, but right on the end result.

"Prediction: Apple Computer Corp. will switch to Intel processors within the next 12 to 18 months."

That said, I usually disagree with what he says...

Yep, that's the *one* time I was thinking about. Prediction: if one throws enough crap on the wall, something is bound to stick eventually. I recall reading op-eds by him in Macworld around 1995, so he's been at it for quite some time now.

I'm no Apple fanboi, but FUD and misinformation like the manure that usually litters Dvorak's op-eds is just annoying. The noise/signal ratio is way too high with that man.

Is your emotion sensor in the shop? I'm not mad, I was just trying to clear up potential FUD. I don't know the guy I responded to from Adam so how would I know he was being sarcastic?

I've also seen so many idiotic "dealbreaker" comments on MacNN as of late.

PS. Why are you looking at me like that and why are you angry?

It's not a rumor, it's a Dvorak fact.

Which is about as credible as my neighbor's dog's pile o' crap.

There’s your first clue. Not sure exactly where it originated, but anything using the word “dealbreaker” (or, even better, “dealbraker”) ’round here is pretty sure to be sarcasm.

IIRC it came from when the iPhone first came out. About 50 people picked out a single feature of the iPhone that they didn't like, declared it the "deal-breaker" for them, and decided their strong feelings warranted creating a thread.

Seriously, these kind of things can manipulate the AAPL stock price. Right now, the iPhone is the main driver for AAPL growth. Seeding false "news" like that is willful manipulation.
