Hi! Been around here for quite a while but haven't posted here, yet.

Here's the short version ... major motion picture studio is being
created in San Marcos, CA - about 30 north of San Diego. I'm a
51 year friend to one of the owners. He's asked me aboard to
find some people who know some answers and I've done a pretty
good job, so far.

Skeptical? Yep - everyone is. I'll add some proof here if you like
later - but at the moment, I need some pretty fast feedback from
anyone 'in the know.'

This is a thread I wrote earlier on a motion picture forum - forget the
cutsie stuff - I'm in a hurry this morning, so I haven't time to edit.

I toss this out to you - any ideas? Get past the feeling that this is a joke -
it's not - as I said before, I'll return to validate it.

The question:

I'm a Mac Guy from about '84/'85 ... everyone who praises Macs to me is just singing to the choir. I LOVE MACS!

... here's the deal ... hypothetically speaking, of course, IF a guy who has been told that Macs are 'better than' the competition ... in the business ... hypothetically, let's say 'the movie (film, flickers - whatever) business' ... and let's say, this guy's going to a major studio planning meeting tomorrow afternoon ... and let's say this guy (who loves his Macs) wants to pitch Macs for an upcoming major purchase ... just hypothetically speaking, of course) ... what does that hypothetical guy say to the hypothetical pardners, while making the hypothetical pitch?

Are there studio package deals through Apple - just hypothetically speaking, of course.

... any ideas, gang?
Thanks in advance,

Scott McCoy

I'll bite.

Here's what you say: Macs will save you a fortune in maintenance and support over the years.
They require a smaller IT department compared to PC based IT departments.

Other money reasons (applicable to anything):
Incorporate the film in question;
then sell the computers at a loss to the newly created company,
then lease them back from the newly created company.

What osiris said about cost, support, and maintenance, AND:

A lot has changed since the Macintosh's inception. Most noteably, Apple has moved to Intel processors. This means you can run Windows and Mac OS X simultaneously (or boot into exclusively). This also means that you can confidently tell your partners that the reason you're using Macs (instead of a Windows PC) is specifically because in the movie industry, you want to be ready and capable of dealing with any file format, application, or communication protocol that comes your way. With a Mac, you can make sure you can open those Final Cut & Logic projects, AVID/Digidesign projects, AfterEffects, Office 2003 documents, you name it. Mac or Windows, doesn't matter; you have the best of one world and can tolerate the other.

With Windows, you're stuck.

A major motion picture studio in San Marcos? So it'll be like, restaurant, restaurant, Korean church, restaurant, major movie studio, restaurant, restaurant, Korean church, restaurant?

There's a great Hometown Buffet in town.

288 Rancheros Drive
San Marcos, CA 92069

I don't remember why, but many years ago, I use to drive through San Marcos on the way to somewhere in San Diego, and my wife and kids loved the Hometown Buffet there.

Let's see if I read this correctly. You're asking people on a Mac forum this question? Why wouldn't you be asking Apple, or one of its authorized resellers? Hmmm.
Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

Yes, you read it correctly. No I didn't just ask one Mac forum but I have asked several. Matter of fact, I've asked several in three different countries.

I've been knocking around bulletin boards and then net forums for almost thirty years now. I've learned two things very well. IF you want to know what's REALLY going on ... ask the folks who actually USE whatever you want to know about. I've also learned that folks who are passionate about something love to share their opinions and dreams with others who are interested.

I find that I can/have successfully networked like minded professionals in England, Canada and the good ole USA! Soon we're going to be employing a few thousand new employees and I've found/been referred to many from folks they've worked with for a long time. It works - works very well. It's a win, win situation.

If you've got a good industry resume and a desire to live in the finest place in the world - I think so, been here 51 years - and if we're interested, we'll talk.

In the meantime I have 38 pages of (mostly) pros and (few) cons pertaining to my question.

I've asked similar questions - because I needed answers from the professionals who can speak with authority to the areas of directing, film editing, cinematography, set designers, etc.

Life should be fun - I have lived that credo and wouldn't have it any other way!

Don't overlook the obvious!
