That's because hundreds of sites including MacNN front page are now linking to it and calling it the iPhone killer

They could have at least shaded it so it looked like it was real.
From what I can gather, they're trying to generate some buzz for their product. reading their customer statement, they state that "Our multimedia players began their design and development process over a year before the recently unveiled Apple iPhone® and LG Prada Phone."
It could be cool, but frankly I think it'll be too little too late. They're a small company, they likely don't have the power to really push a device like this.

They're not anything. They can't even decide what to call their joke device, multimedia player or smart phone? There's an icon for 'phone' and the status bar says it is connected to T-Mibile. Yes, T-Mibile.
I bet this is a prank device and that the site owner is going to use the attention to launch deeda.com about something else. iWalk did the same thing. It was to get attention for SpyMac. Could be the same person behind it.

Yeah, I'm software. I don't really exist except as a Matrix-like program that posts opinions based on contextual observation. By CS4 I should have really good AI.

Third-party app development on a $500 phone is insane?

Insane as in insanely good. We want insanely good 3rd party apps on iPhones.

It's not even that - third-party app development is more of a standard feature on expensive smartphones.
Heck, if you're on a provider that uses Java on their phones, chances are you can get third-party apps even for a cheap/free phone.
