Thousands of people have been 'fleeced' into buying neatly coiffured lambs they thought were poodles.
http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article....;in_page_id=34
But the scam was only spotted after a leading Japanese actress said her 'poodle' didn't bark and refused to eat dog food.

This is what you get for wanting a poodle.
Best poodle I ever tasted, though.

Wouldn't the hoofed feet be an indication it wasn't a dog? Whether you've actually seen a poodle or not?

Both are rare in Japan, so it's an easy con.

Not to generalize an entire culture, but I could easily picture some of my Japanese acquaintances falling for this. One Japanese girl I know believed that Shrek was a true story; another guy can't tell the difference between a cigarette and a cigar; and yet another of my Japanese acquaintances insists that there is no noticeable difference between a raft and a canoe.

This seems unbelievable, if only because they can tell each other apart.

OT: Not to diss you, but maybe your Japanese friends are lacking in mental abilities and/or misunderstood you. Not one Japanese person I know would make the mistakes you listed. Although they do insist that the "F" in Fuji is pronounced "Hu", and that the "H" in Hitori is pronounced "Sh"...
nevermind, it is a strange culture...

It is, in much of the Kanto region - or at least closer to "sh" than to "hi".

When you see a cat selling for $1,000 in Hiroshima, and people are shocked when I tell them you can get cats for FREE in the US, this isn't surprising. (Though with all the street cats I see running around, you'd think people would have an easy source of free kittens.) While many Japanese people are probably very far out of touch when it comes to farm animals, you get this same kind of thing in many areas. While the Japanese friends I always hang out with have traveled outside of Japan and are rather worldly, many people I meet randomly have weird views.
Examples of things I have been asked or told:
You're american? How many guns do you own? (Not IF but HOW MANY)
Are all the janitors in your public schools black or hispanic? (In Japan, kids clean the schools. Which is why they're so dirty...)
You can eat fish?
You can use chop stick?!?!? (I'd been eating next to this person for 6 months before that.)
Your Japanese is very good! (After saying "bye bye" to some kids. Young people think "Bye Bye" is Japanese.)
The best one I can think of though, is what I was told by some female friends of mine while talking about birth control. All the foreign girls had been or were on 'the pill', none of the Japanese girls had ever tried it. "The pill causes AIDs. The pill makes it so you can't have babies. The pill causes STDs." This would explain why the pill is only used by around 1% of the female population.
At times I think Japan is almost as bad as the US is...... (Kidding kidding....)

In retrospect, I bet the lamb was pretty darn soft and fluffy compared to a poodle.
But then, poodle tastes better.

I'd rather own a lamb than a poodle, to be honest.

Too bad about the hoax. Would have been a classic case of a sheep in woof clothing....
|
|
Life is like a clay pigeon -- sooner or later, someone is going to shoot you down and even if they miss you'll still wind up shattered and broken in the end.
