Jesus Christ. What a mess. I was up til 3am sunday night, sanding on my underwater log finder model. We had to make clay models, then cast them in plaster, then make fiber reinforced plastic models from those molds. Here's a pic from sunday night, after I cast it in resin, reinforced with carbon fiber in the front, and fiberglass in hte back.
Class at 8am. Class til 7pm. After 7pm, I went home to work on my biology presentation. My biology experiment turned out okay, until the iMovie file corrupted itself at 2am. Then I had to redo the whole thing, which took until 5:45am. I slept til 9am, then woke up and finished a poster to accompany my video of the biology experiement, and then went to school to present it at 11. From 12 until 5, I built the model for my spudgun sniper rifle, which is a pnuematic badass looking air cannon. Here's a little pic:
I'll make a thread about it later. Anyway, after 5, I worked on my log finder model til 2am, then went to a friend's house with a few other people to finish painting. We stayed up all night, no sleep, til 8am. Then I had class til 3:30.
Today, I woke up at 11ish, and I went to bed last night at about 9pm. I'm still tired. I have a presentation to put together, and put some finishing touches on my fiberglass model. Ugh. This week sucks.

No. I did it in photoshop, and used it to cite all my sources.

PS: Those are NOT my drawings in the background. They suck. I will post some sweet drawings later tonight, maybe. They turned out pretty rad.

I think it's cool that you can make stuff. I have never made any stuff worth keeping. I'm not very good working with my hands.
It's my last week of the semester, as well. In fact, I have 2 papers to finish today. One research paper (almost done explaining the statistical results), and one critique of a weak research article that was actually published.
I hope I'm not up as late as you were. They're due in the morning.

Wow, sounds like you're really busy! I was lucky enough to only have one project this semester, which was just designing a vibration/temperature monitoring system for a diesel engine. But after finishing that and 5 final exams, I'm done! I'm looking forward to seeing your spud gun, your stuff is usually pretty cool.

Thanks. It will be pretty neat, I think, as long as I don't get shot over it.

Why make a clay positive mold, then a plaster negative mold?
Why not just create a positive mold in foam, spray it with mold release, wrap the fiber, add epoxy, cure, and then cut it in half to pull the foam out?

Wow. I typed a long response, and then computer refreshed this page for no reason and now it's gone. Fantastic. I love windows.
Short version: This is a materials class. We had to learn the basics of clay modeling. Clay modeling is a powerful tool, that allows a bit more organic/spontaneous forms than CAD. We had to make a clay model to learn how to use the clay, and how to work with it. Once your clay model is finalized, you then learn how to make a strong plaster mold. Fiberglass is generally molded into negative molds, as you can put down a thick layer of resin before you add the fiberglass cloth/carbon fiber/whatever you want for strength... this gives you a surface that's easy to sand and finish.

This drawing turned out sweet. I had to design a vinyl toy. This was almost done, after doing all the marker renderings I scanned them in, arranged them (what you see here), then converted to black and white, printed out on 11X14, then copied that onto some green canson paper, and finished rendering with prismacolor markers and pencils, and then some pro white. I am the pro white ninja. Prowhite kicks ****ing ass.

Makes sense, I can see why design students want a lot of plastic on the outside to smooth and finish. The engineering students are usually more concerned with weight and strength, so the positive molds work well.

Or they just want a shitty model. You can't inset anything very easily by wrapping a model with glass or bondo, nor can you do internal wiring for lights, speakers, etc.
