I came across the following informative comic by an relatively unknown artist:

I believe this warrants a discussion of what it means to be ethical and, in particular, the issue of people who do not include your original email in their response.

Please discuss.

Based only on your post, I'm wondering what this discussion is about.

And, oh yes...I hate bstone.

I actually GOT both the Dilbert joke and the point of this thread. "Go ahead with this" without a reference for what "this" is is semantically without content. Depending on the situation, I would either contact the emailer directly (probably phone them) and ask for another email that explicitly told me what "this" was, or I'd wait a bit for such a clarification to appear on its own and then contact them. Either way, without a clear idea of what exactly I was supposed to do, and to cover my rather sizable butt, I wouldn't do ANYTHING until I had explicit instructions. I have actually had to explain this sort of thing to people with graduate degrees: "If I don't have something detailed to show that I'm instructed to do a particular thing, then how can I justify using the resources and time to do it?" "Hmmm. I guess I see your point." (Obviously NOT really seeing the point, but humoring me with another, more specific email works just as well as seeing the point as far as covering my butt goes.)

You're confusing them with buffalo. Or something.

I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like. Its got a basket, a bell that rings and things to make it look good. I'd give it to you if I could but I borrowed it.
