Alright i want to buy some AAPL, but im in Australia. I have a few friendswho recommended Ameritrade, but as a resident of Australia i cannot open an account with them. what are my options for buying APPL ?
Ive never dealt in shared before, so im a complete newbie when it comes to doing this. i Know how the idea of it, but im not aware of how to go about actually trading and the fees associated with it.
Any advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks

Check out Etrade, and Scottrade. I used Etrade as a starter project for University, and my parents use Scottrade...both very easy to navigate (I found Etrade very easy to use as a newbie, also has lot more tools) and fairly cheap (between US$8-$10 PER share). This pretty works like a bank account, you put money in your account with one of the firms, and then you can buy stocks as much your balance allows you to do so. You watch the status of Apple stocks (and yours) rise/decline instantly, buy/sell as you see fit...etc.
Have you tried calling Ameritrade, or one of your local financial institutions in Australia? They (Ameritrade) will let you know how to make an account with them as an Australian, you may have to do it over the phone instead of online. I know few of my relatives (from England) owns shares of American biotech companies...its expensive, but can be done.

I'm not sure you could just open a brokerage account in the US. You don't have a SSN, so I can't imagine how this is going to work just over the phone or internet.
You best option is probably to open a brokerage account with an Australian bank.

When I used to work in the market, I simply used a ComSec (Commonwealth Securities) account. Easy to open, and not bad all around. I wasn't too concerned with the brokerage fees and whatnot as I was looking at long-term investments, and the basic ComSec package probably isn't appropriate for daytrading. If all you want to do is buy some stock and let it stew, check that out.

Should be less of a problem then. Do you have a permanent address in the US ?
I think they need something on file...
