I was driving back home today, and took a route that I usually have little reason to drive down. It's kind of out of my way, but I didn't have anything else to do, so why not? While driving along, I was nearly knocked out of my car by the sight pictured below. If extreme Southern types make you queasy, you might not want to click this...

Yes, that is a mailbox.
No, I don't have an explanation.

I think it's cute, in a my-four-year-old-decorates-my-house kind of way.

I know northerners who love to fish, but posting the 10 Commandments in your yard (in front of the fake well in the background) seems to be a southern thing. I see it a lot in the Bible belt. I can't say I've seen any mailboxes like that, however.

Hey Jawbone, do you have something against southerners? That crazy thread by whoever on "more reasons to hate the south" a month or so ago was sad.

Oh, I thought he mean the fish, not the 10CMDments

Actually, I've seen that mailbox more than once here in Michigan, and I didn't think that it was a big enough to deal to try to generalize and stereotype the owners, but that's just me. I can't imagine why it's important to make a big deal out of someone's mail box. Maybe they're big fishing fans; why care?

Wouldn't you think about what sort of conclusion people are going to draw about you / your lifestyles and values by having a freakin translucent fish for a mail box?

They should just get 'red neck' tattooed on their foreheard and be done with it.

I was born and have lived in the South for 22 of my 24 years on earth. I have absolutely nothing against the South; as a matter of fact, I don't think I ever want to live in any other region (I'm probably too conservative to survive in many other places). I'm very proud to be a Southerner.

It's just that the bass-box was a bit.......I really don't even have the right words for it.

Oh, and to C.A.T.S. CEO, I know people fish from every region, but it seems like I'm the only guy in my parish that isn't a big fisherman. Every lake in this area is filled with bass boats every...single...Saturday. This guy especially takes it to the next level.

And the 10 Commandment sign in the front yard is extremely popular right now. I'd say about 10% of the houses in my neighborhood have them. I like the sign a lot, actually.

What part of the "south?"

A lot of people in Minnesota, Land of 10,000 Lakes, must have big mouth bass mailboxes also.

Wow, Jawbone has enough of a sense of humor to poke fun at the area he was raised in and he gets crucified for it. MacNN really does have a bug up its ass lately.

And a 10 commandments sign in the front yard sounds obnoxious as hell

If i did not have CF mailboxes in my neighbothood, I would buy a Bass Mailbox. That thing is hilarious! And what about a fish mailbox makes this a south exclusive? It's not like it's a shaped like a NASCAR vehicle being driven by a guy with a mullet with the Stars and Bars on it.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

I think is the picture you meant to post Jawbone. I wish this one was taken in the south, unfortunately it was taken in the middle of Michigan.

My fishing buddy has that same mailbox. Central New York is certainly NOT the south. It is the passion, not the location.

I don't see either one as obnoxious (the gay flag or the ten commandments). But I'm not sure how to compare the two...

OHMYGOD SOUTHERN STEREOTYPES! OMG! RUN! THE LOCKINATION IS COMING!

At least, it does if I enter the discussion. Luckily, I only discuss celtic name origins, like those of this link:

Origins of the Kilby name

Tee hee.

But seriously, railroader, check it out, this coat of arms even describes you:

I'd say that's less obnoxious. Unless they're trying to tell you to live your life gay™.

I love Southerners, real down to earth people and generous. Though taste can be an issue at times, I don't hold it against them.
I'm just glad those miniature lawn Jockies are becoming a rarity.
The 10 commandments thing - ehh, big deal - so as long as they hold themselves to the values depicted.
