He's going to get tanked and wake up with a mailbox that looks like a fish next to him in bed in the morning.

But in all seriousness, yes. My sister and her fiance made some recommendations and told me what's good and what sucks. My dad also gave me a talk about making wise decisions and not ruining my life.

Happy birthday!

I waited a little more than a year after I turned 21 to drink. I had went on a bender a few months before I turned 21 and was quite gun shy. Let's just say the evening involved a 1/5th of Absolute, a 12 pack of Budweiser, a few strippers and a trampoline...

Really, you have to be 21? Which state is that and are there any states where's it's older? I thought most of the US had made it 18 now. It's 18 in the UK, but we do have a massive drinking problem, the age issue is not the cause though.

I don't want to turn this political, but what age can you own a gun?

From my experience: at first alcohol will just be a way to get yourself completely wasted. For most people this phase only lasts a few years. For others it lasts forever. If you're smart it will be short and you'll learn to appreciate the finer points of alcohol, the many varied and magical beers, the sweet allure of wines, the cowboy image of the whiskey drinker, the proper vodka and maybe eventually you'll even like rice wine.

But stay away from cider.

Yep - it's quite ridiculous. You can sign up for the military, fight, kill and die in Iraq, vote, get married, own a gun, but not have a beer.

That's probably unlikely. I'm going out to a pizza place, then a movie or something afterwards, then driving 25 minutes home, so I need to be good for that.

I once knew someone that died from voting and driving. I move to increase the voting age to 21.

Well I'm not sure what the ciders in the states are like. The traditional ones in the UK are normally at least 6% (going up to about 9%, some are rumoured to be stronger, but the government won't let the brewers sell them, they do anyway but say it's weaker) - it's not that strong but the thing is it's so sweet you drink it quicker than beer. It will also give you a much worse hangover. It is nice though. Hell just give it a go. If you do like it, look out for perry too, that's cider made from pears.

Actually I think the warning should be to stay away from all that crap stuff smirnoff ice and other alcopops (dunno what the term is in the US, these small bottles of very artificial sugary alcohol that are basically marketed to teenagers).

Is the age restriction in the US largely followed? In the UK it seems to be honored more in the breach...

I think what they do is advertise it as something like 8.5%. This is a magic number. If it's 8.5% it secretly means it may be way higher. Easy to get away with in small pubs and local microbreweries.

But seriously.
I had the Woodchuck on my sister's recommendation and a St. Pauli Girl that one of my friends suggested. I have another friend that spent some time in the Czeck Republic and swears by Pilsner Urquell, so I tried a sip of that too. After that we went and played ultimate frisbee on campus, then had some ice cream at Coldstone. It was a good time.
