A handful of people I know (or don't know) have a "straying eye", I don't know the correct term. One of their eyes doesn't look straight at the target.

Here's an example photo

Is there any reason for this? It's like they can never look you straight in the eyes, they are always looking a bit to your left or right.

No it's not me, and it's a girl btw

I got it off of facebook, it's just the best pic I could find to illustrate the example. What is this called?

Oddly enough, I had something a bit like that when I was a kid. I don't know what it's called, but whenever I stared off into the distance or (to use the term) "let my eyes glaze over" one would kinda wander off a little. I had surgery when I was in grade 3 and they cut the muscles on the outsides of my eyes because they were slightly too tight. Now I can still do it, but just mostly when I try to. It's pretty freaky/weird.

Just like a cars stearing system, you have tie rods that keep your eyes looking in the same direction. If one of the bolts in these tie rods gets loose, or your tie rods get streached and/or bent (often cause by over enthusiastic nose picking or a brain tumor), it can cause this effect. You should go ask your opthamologist to check your tie rods before you develop excessive edge wear on your eyeballs.

I knew a whole family that had that really bad. Their vision seemed to be all right, but they were almost disturbing to look in the eye because one eye would always be way off to the side.

Could also be amblyopia (lazy eye), which in turn can be the result of long-term strabismus (doesn't have to be, though).

I've always wondered if the people that have them know it. Like...how do you know for a fact you don't have at least a minor case.

Photos.

My fiancé has a very minor straying eye that is not detectable when just looking at her, but in photos it sometimes shows up.

I've got Duane's Retraction Syndrome where my left eye is incapable of going completely to the left. goes up, down, and right, but just stops at the middle when trying to go left. it does not wander and is not the same thing as a lazy eye. I can look two directions at once, so I'm basically an x-man.

I've got it very slightly when I'm tired. It only shows up in pictures though. Unnoticeable when you see me IRL and when I'm not tired. Looks a bit freaky but my eye sight is perfect.

Just a small tidbit, but in Japan, they call that "ronpari" which is short for London-Paris; in other words, someone who has eyes like that appears to be trying to look at both London and Paris at the same time...

I know someone who has it really bad. Its almost as if one eye is fake and almost never moves, but its real. I find it difficult at times to decide which eye to look at when he's talking to me.

Why do some people have a "straying eye"?
Too much communism. Not enough boobies.

That's a fact.

That chick in your sig needs to grow her hair. And do booby-enhancing exercises three times a day.

I also find it difficult to know what to do. Choose an eye to look at? Looking between the eyes?

Ever have one of those eye opening experiences? I have been just glancing at your sig and I had thought it was a camel! Now that I put my eyes 2 inches from the screen and look I see it is a guy playing guitar.

Seriously, squint really hard and look at the guy. He looks like a camel.

Or maybe I have a "straying eye"?

Grab them and make the both point in the same direction. If the owner objects just tell her that she's got enough problems with her eyes and you didn't want her to have to go through life with Marty Feldman boobies too. Or tell her that I said so. She'll understand.

Now that I've looked closer, it doesn't look like a chick at all. It looks like Rod Hull and Emu giving a particularly rocking performance.
