I'm getting this board to build a computer, and I can't seem to figure out what heatsink/cooling fan to get for it. I looked on the manufactures product page but it doesn't say anything there.

Any help is appreciated.

Newegg.com - ZALMAN 9700 LED 110mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler - Retail

My choice from the wide range of a search for 'socket 939 cooler' on newegg.

get the retail processor and it'll come with a decent HSF.

I second getting the retail CPU package. It usually works out to be either the same price or a bit cheaper when it all shakes out, and the heatsink/fan combination is "conservative" (as in more than you're likely to need) because of the way some people abuse CPUs.

I would recommend a large Zalman fan such as the one linked above. Better cooling performance than the manufacturer's fan and since it's much larger it runs at lower RPM and is therefore far quieter. Some of those retail fans can sound like a hair dryer.

Type Zalman 939 into newegg or tigerdirect and choose any. (Fans are designed to fit a certain CPU socket size. Yours is a socket 939)

large Zalman fans are, well, large. They usually require additional mounting screws - and you run the risk of them literally tearing off the motherboard when you move your computer case. Unless you need a super cool, quiet computer there is more viable options... IMHO

I plan to get the motherboard+CPU combo deal at newegg, what do you mean by 'retail processor/CPU package'?

Newegg either sells the processor as "Retail" (which sometimes includes a fan, it will specify) or "OEM" which does not include a fan.

Retail also means you get a warranty.

Did you see the user reviews of that fan? One person literally says it sounds like a hair dryer. Is that what you want??

And yes, the processor in the combo IS OEM - it says so right in its item title. So you do indeed need to buy your own fan. It's not somewhere I would cheap out - having a sh!tty fan will toast your processor especially if your case has poor airflow.

No offense, but you should read the pages a little more carefully! Pretty much all of our answers have been right ON the pages you're linking us to! heh

I'll keep looking, but I don't see 'OEM' in the title: 'Foxconn 6150BK8MC-KRSHN2 Socket 939 NVIDIA GeForce 6150 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard'

The PROCESSOR is OEM - look at the processor that's in the combo on the lower left of the screen.

AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Venice 2.2GHz Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3400DAA4BY - OEM

I'm really not trying to make you look dense, but you're not helping either.

motherboards and processors are different.

You want a retail processor. That'll include the HSF.
The processor in that bundle says:
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Venice 2.2GHz Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3400DAA4BY - OEM

Well, Peter, I think I can live with OEM, how does this fan sound?

OEM's are crap and not worth it -- no warranty, no heat sink or fan included, and I always hear reports of the pins being bent in shipping.

Plus since you're already spending that much why not go for the Dual Core 3800+ which can be had there for $76 shipped.

The motherboard+CPU+RAM+heatsink must be under $200, I'll keep looking, if you guys can help me find a good, cheap, non-OEM processor that would be really sweet

I'm really not looking for lots o' power with this machine, more of a beginner type of thing...

I don't know about OEM parts being "crap" but they are meant for a certain audience. I buy almost all of my parts OEM since I like to save a few bucks and don't mind sending back an occasional DOA. For CPUs, I'd much rather supply my own (larger, quieter) cooler than be stuck with a loud retail fan.

Socket AM2 motherboards are on NewEgg for $46 which are pretty decent and have a PCI Express x16, and you can get PC5300 DDR2 667 MHz RAM for $33 in 1 GB chips. So for $164 SHIPPED I got the dual-core retail processor with 1 GB RAM and the motherboard.
