The final straw: finding today that you can host 1 gig of photos on Google, for free, via a nice easy to use iPhoto plugin (photos.google.com).

Together with Gmail and Google Calendar, this has made .Mac redundant for me. Does anyone still use it? If so, for what? The iDisk is the only useful thing, but it's not worth the money on its own. Can anyone suggest a good iDisk alternative for moving large files?

I'm excited about this plug-in...it was annoying for me to go into iPhoto, export photos, open Camino (Safari doesn't offer the features of Camino), go to Photobucket, sit there and let them upload/resize, then finally post pictures. This is great.

I've been using Flickr, along with Flickr Uploadr. Just drag from iPhoto to the uploader and done.
I like my water with hops, malt, hops, yeast, and hops.

How much space do you get with flickr (it doesn't say in their tour)? I like their map feature, although no doubt google photos will soon integrate with google maps.

Is there a way to link to images you've uploaded to Google? I can't seem to find one. If you can't host images there, that's the dealbreaker for me.

Also, it turns out Facebook has an iPhoto plugin, this is amazing.

You're not alone in this. It's not why I have a .Mac account personally, but I know several others for which that's the case.

I have flip-flopped several times on whether or not I'm going to keep it when my subscription runs out this summer.

It's through Picasaweb. I checked out the uploader earlier, but it was having issues logging into my google account.

Flickr is unlimited with a pro account. I think the monthly upload limit is something like 30GB, more than I ever need. I use flickr because most of my buddies are on there and as an additional backup.

Yeah, Flickr Pro is unlimited... the free version is 100/mb per month with no storage limit.

macfanboy.net is available, if you want to have it all to yourself... That plus Google Apps For Your Domain and GCalDaemon will do almost everything you could want

flickr > photos.google.com
as for web mail... debatable. Don't like to trust Google with my important email really - I prefer to roll my own domain (thanks to DreamHost) and so on.

I use Flickr for photos, and dreamhost for webmail/websites, and Google for calendaring (with Spanning Sync, its just too good!)

Flickr owns.

I take it you only have one computer. Sync is the .Mac dealbreaker.

I have been using .Mac/iTools since it was introduced. I have decided to start making the transition away from .Mac now, and i will not be renewing my subscription come November.

.Mac is grossly overpriced in this day and age. i dont see the "value" in it anymore..its cool stuff..but definately not worth what Apple is asking for it.

.Mac was overpriced from the day it was transmogrified from iTools.

Though I do like the fact that that sentence begins and ends with periods.

Hawkeye did that first . But at least your sentence has got 'that that' in it, I like repeated words in sentences, had had is a good one too.

Anyway, yes I use .Mac, and I use it mainly to have an @mac.com email address and for file storage for images on t'internet.

Look after my manor, or I will bum you, literally, to death.

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

When you drew that Fish-And-Chips sign, you should have put a hyphen between Fish and And and And and Chips.

Buy yourname.com ($9/yr), host it with Gmail for Your Domain (free), and use mac@yourname.com

See, google likes you. .Mac LOVES you. Thats the main difference.

Though I've always suspected that .Mac only loves you for your money.

.Mac doesn't even speak to me anymore. It's like I'm talking to a brick wall.

With 4 Mac's in the house, .mac is a very easy way to keep everything synced up. Passwords, bookmarks, email accounts, iDisk, backup and easy web site updates. £69 a year is much cheaper than my time it would take to set up the alternatives. Would be nice if they offered some more storage space for the same price though.

Agreed wholeheartedly. I don't mind paying for convenience. The @mac.com e-mail address is admitted vanity, too, but I like it.

The one time I did briefly flirt with goin' the Google route for everything, I couldn't get a name anywhere even close to my own. I tried first.last@gmail.com | first-last@gmail.com | flast@gmail.com | f_last@gmail.com | first_last@gmail.com .. everything. None of 'em worked. I refuse to have an e-mail address with a bunch of numbers in it, like it's 1993 on AOL or somethin'.

For as often as this exact same topic comes up, it should be a sticky by now.

sync is the main thing that does it for me. I also like the tools integration and my .mac e-mail address.
- iMac 3.2Ghz 1TB - MacBook Pro 15" Core i7 2.3Ghz / 256SSD (Work laptop)
- PowerMac G5 - Dual 2.0 Ghz, 3GB, Soundsticks!,
- Lenovo Thinkpad T510 (also a work laptop), Win 7 Enterprise, 8GB, 320GB HDD
