Amazon.de: Der Untergang (Premium Edition, Extended Version, 3 DVDs): DVD: Bruno Ganz,Alexandra Maria Lara,Corinna Harfouch,Joachim C. Fest,Traudl Junge,Stefan Zacharias,Oliver Hirschbiegel
This is one of my favorite films ever, and I just found out that there is an extended version. I looked around for it, and found it on amazon.de. However, will it be in a different region code because it's german?
I recently bought the Babel 2 disc set from amazon.co.uk, and I had to change my drive region code, to make it play. I ripped it to my computer, and then changed the region code back. It's weird that it only lets me change the region codes of my burner's, 5 times each. But I can afford to change it to the german region code, rip the disks to my computer, and then change it back.
So.. yeah.. does that make any sense?? Is there a US version of the extended movie that I just didn't find online?
Thanks.

The Japanese section of Babel was the only thing I liked about it.
You have to get The Lives of Others / Das Leben der Anderen. That was the best movie in a quite a while. The last scene is just liquid gold.

Er, I know you didn't give away any plot details, but I don't even like to be told "The last scene is just liquid gold". That makes me feel like somethings been given away.
But yeah, I do wanna see that movie. It's just been taking a while to get to DVD.

It's funny you should bring up Downfall since I just watched it a few days ago on Encore.
My German is not quite up to par yet so I had to depend on the subtitles mostly. But even so... excellent flick.

So.. what's the deal with the 3 disc extended edition? Should I buy it? Will it be able to play in my computer?

Pretty sure it won't.
The best idea I can think of is to buy the set, then use MacTheRipper to remove the region lock and then make region-free copies of the discs.

Hmm, yeah. I'd still have to change my region code to Region 2, temporarily, just to get the disc shown up on my desktop. And my drives are running out of times they can do that, haha. And that DVD probably doesn't even have subtitles...

It says on amazon.de that this DVD set is region code 2.
I haven't seen the movie. The "downfall" is no surprise. How this criminal could rise to power is the real shocker.

Hmm. I looked, but couldn't find if it says whether or not there are subtitles. Can you find that out for me? I can't read German.

DVD 1: Enthält die TV-Fassung von 175 Min. Optional deutsche Untertitel für Hörgeschädigte (Colortitle), Optional englische Untertitel für Hörgeschädigte, Optional Audiokommentar Bernd Eichinger
Looks like it to me. Unless my German is way worse than I think it is.

Hmm... it says optional german subtitles for Horgeschadigte, whatever that is, and then (Colortitle). Then it says optional english subtitles for horgeschadigte, without the (colortitle) after it. What does that mean?

You said you have multiple drives. Why not keep one on region 2 and one on region 1?

Hörgeschädigte means hearing impaired. They have some additional cues for important sounds and music.
Just a question to you guys: could you really appreciate the subtle nuances in the language and all? I was thinking about this when I watched `Das Leben der Anderen' with a German and an American friend last week: there were so many details that weren't at all obvious to someone who hasn't lived in Germany …Â

Oh.. so those aren't genuine subtitles. They're for the hearing impaired. That sucks. Anyways, I ordered the 3 disc set from amazon.de. I had to make it through the registration process in german, haha. It was fun.
Anyways, I don't wanna keep one drive on Region 2, cause i'd never be able to use it for anything but my few Region 2 DVD's.

Let's face it, that film needs subtitles even in German. My command of the language is good, and I could barely make out a word Adolf was saying. It's like the filmmakers deliberately tried to make him unintelligible.

You can use it for anything except decoding other encrypted DVDs
You can still write DVDs, and read any non-commercial DVDs on it. How does it matter which drive you use to play region 1 DVDs on?

There was exactly one recording of Hitler talking normally, i. e. having a conversation without knowing it is being recorded. That's how Ganz prepared himself.

So, if one of my drives is on Region 2, I can do ANYTHING with it, except for watch a Region 1 movie? I guess that's reasonable.
Anyways, I'm looking through the Extended Cut of the movie that I downloaded a couple days ago, and the pitch of the audio is nearly a half tone higher than my DVD. Also, the music is timed differently to the scene in some places. I guess that's just cause it was extended, and things like that could be different. But I hope the pitch isn't higher on the official DVD.
And how bad are Subtitles for the hearing impaired? Will I be able to watch it without being annoyed, if i'm not hearing impaired?

And watch Region 3 movies, and watch Region 4 movies, but yeah.

Sounds like a sound encoding problem with the downloaded version - DVD audio tends to run at 48 kHz sampling rate, while CD audio is 44.1 kHz. If audio material is played back at the wrong sample rate without sample rate conversion, there will be a noticeable pitch difference.
Somebody messed up somewhere?

Can't you people just see how retarded DVD region coding is? Our friend here the original poster wants to buy this particular DVD, but because of region encoding, in the end he will not buy it.
The MPAA just lost a sale due to their stupid policies

Why on earth do you think every one of us DOESN'T see just how retarded DVD region encoding is?
Just because we're actually spending our time answering his questions rather than ranting about misconceived market protection and industry idiocy all day?

It might be the DVD. I know at least in TV shows, sometimes in converting from NTSC-film (24 fps) to PAL (25 fps) they just scale the whole movie, audio and all, making the pitch about a half-tone higher, and just hope not enough people care.
No, it will make you deaf.

Yes, again, how can it possibly matter which drive on the same machine is used for playing which DVD?

If you're willing to download the whole movie, surely you're willing to download a subtitles rip for it...?

I AM buying the DVD. No one is losing a sale.
And to get a subtitles rip for it, I have to rip the disk to my computer. There's no way to attach a subtitles rip to it, in DVD player, and if I play it in VLC, the movie will be in seperate chunks....

Well, I already have a subtitles rip for the extended movie, cause it came with my download, however it's in 2 parts. Maybe the movie will be on 2 different disks as well.. cause there are 3 discs in the set.
In any case, how do you open a DVD with VLC, AND attach subtitles to it? Do you just go "open file", and select a video TS folder, and then load the subtitles folder as well?

Why would turning on subtitles in VLC be any different than it is with any other DVD player? I don't see any reason why you would have to do anything other than enable them in the DVD's interactive menu.
You know... Upon re-reading this thread, I can't help but think you're over complicating this massively.

The only subtitles available in the DVD's interactive menu will be English Subtitles for the Hearing Impaired. How do I plug a subtitles rip file into the DVD in VLC?

What's the problem with subtitles for the hearing impaired. Yes, there's an eventual "Dramatic music playing" displayed, but you can just ignore this.

What is your problem? VLC has a playlist. Just play that download
In any case, how do you open a DVD with VLC, AND attach subtitles to it?
If you really want to do that you can rip the DVD into one big VOB file and then open the subs manually, or change the name of the subs to match the vob file and put them in the same directory and VLC will find them.

Okay. I just got the DVD. There are no english subtitles for hearing impaired. There are german subtitles for hearing impaired, but that's it.
When the DVD is opened in DVD player, there is no way to attach external subtitles to it. The whole 3 hour movie is on ONE disc, and my subtitles files are split into two files, part 1 and part 2. When I open the DVD in VLC, and say "Load a subtitles file" they don't load. They aren't seen by the DVD somehow. I'm ripping the disk with MacTheRipper right now.. maybe i'll be able to do more with it once it's region lock is off.

Well I don't know what to tell you except that about 60 seconds of searching just found me a 1-file srt version of english subs for that movie. If you don't like that, then you can open the subs you have in a text editor/excel and combine them by hand. Or you can convert them to QT text with Titlelab (or if they are srt the QT srtImport component I wrote once which is on versiontracker), then combine them with each other and the movie in QT Pro.

Where is the 1 file srt version of english subs? And is it for the Extended version of the film?
If it really exists, then all I need is a way to open up the movie in a single .avi/.mov/.vob file. Whatever. The Format doesn't matter. It just needs to be one file that plays at DVD quality. I can attach subtitles to that.

Given that the MPAA is now busting subtitles sites, I don't think it's proper to link to them here. But they're not hard to find.
It doesn't need to be one single file, and getting it there will be a lot more trouble than it's worth. VLC and cellulo both handle external subs very well.

So, tell me what you would do. Would you open up the Video_TS folder with VLC, and attach external subs? I've tried that and it doesn't work. But I haven't found an Extended Downfall Subs download, in 1 file.

Alright good. For that, i'll need to know how to rip it to one big vob file, and i'll need to get the subs in 1 file.
How do I rip it to one big vob file?

MacTheRipper doesn't do that. And HandBrake reduces the quality of the video, when it rips it into a single file.
