Granted, 95 percent of YouTube is crap, however, it is playing and will continue to play a vital role in the evolution of so-called "new media".

To date, what videos do you think might be said to have helped YouTube establish itself as an important and influential media platform.

Republican Senator George Allen (What does "macaca" mean? Curtains for George's campaign).
Michael Richards (Learning the hard way that the n-word isn't funny)
Drunk David Hasselhoff (Mmmm... cheese burger)
Saddam Hussein (It's my necktie party, and everyone's invited!)

Can you think of more?

geriatric1927 is everyone's favorite grandfather. The video of him (I think it's his third) where he begins to tear up after getting so many Emails from admirers tugs at my heartstrings every time.

I mainly like the way he pronounces the words "Hello, YouTubers" at the beginning of his vblogs.

He's the 9th most-subscribed You Tube user of all-time. Everyone seems to find him lovable and charming.

Star Wars kid was pretty big, as was All Your Base. I don't know if they originated on YouTube, but if they were new today I'm sure YouTube would be their primary distribution method.

They were pre-YouTube. Forums like this and chain email made them popular. Actually most people read forum posters saying All Your Base without knowing anything about where it came from.

Search "3 year old asked about monsters". That video sets a new standard for adorable. I think it's pretty revolutionary.

2 of my fav's:

Where the Hell is Matt - YouTube - Where the Hell is Matt? - what a lucky guy

Free Hugs Campaign - YouTube - Free Hugs Campaign. (music by Sick Puppies album out April3) - An Australian guy with a cool idea. He felt that people distance themselves so much from others and he wanted to just be nice. There are now videos of this from all over the world. It spread like crazy. Pretty cool.
